    Infra Red Thermometers

Just wondered if anyone here has used one, i am thinking of buying one from Maplins at £14.99, i want to use it to measure coolant temps over different places on the engine, radiator etc.

I bought that one - not sure I trust its accuracy, but it good for relative measurements as long as the gizmo is the same distance away each time.

They work ok, usually to within 2-3 degrees accuracy. They are greatly affected by ambient heat so you have to point at objects from the side, top down will always give a higher reading. As Paul mentioned if you want to measure relative temps they are perfect.

Have a look through model shops for suppliers; it’s the best tool for tuning a nitro engine.

Yes I use one too. Water (radiator), engine (head and block), exhaust, brakes, tyres and even road temperature. Great gadget a must have. I have one with laser pointer and is very accurate with its temperature readings.

i use one too and it is quite accurate according to the readings on the thermal sensors inside the car
had a test done with vagcom for the white sensor on the block, the radiator itself and the MFTS and turned out that the radiator temp was shown on the clima and was the same on the IRgun at 86C(lower switch),the ECU temp at the same time was 92C,same at vagcom and the IRgun and the MFTS was somewhere in the middle leaning towards the ECU indication (in the dash it was 90+1 line= ECU temp actually, while on the IR gun it was around 90C
