Morning all,
My brother bought an 01 1.8 20v passat last year from the mechanic that has done all his work for the past 6 years (with no problems). The car then started overheating and losing water. The mechanic took it in to investigate and had the car for a couple of months while he messed about trying to fix it. he ended up getting the head skimmed at one point, which didn't solve anything. and then got a reconditioned block. Put the car back together and handed it to my brother with a bill for a grand. there was almost a violent incident but for now my brother has left it, just happy to get the car back.
He was driving home from work last night and went to overtake a car but there was no oomph and the engine stuttered a bit. It made it home ok but was hesitating a bit. he took it out this morning again and couldn't get it over 50mph comfortably. It took ages to get there and it's shuddering quite a bit. he reckons he could have got it to 60 but might have blown up.
so.... any ideas what this might be or are we looking at a "could be anything" situation? He wants to be as clued up as possible before he goes round and pulls the guy's ears off after work.
The car only had 96000 on it when he bought it and seemed in good nick. I personally think the guy doesn't know his @r5e from his elbow and just flapped about, running up a bill. I reckon he's now done something stupid putting it back together again. I'd expect this from my own rebuild but not from a mechanic.
cheers
