    200,000 Mile 1.9TDi Audi 80

    Gents,

I am thinking about bidding on this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA:IT&ih=012

Does anyone have any experience running a 200,000 mile 1.9 Tdi?

Is it going to *eat* that mileage or do have potential problems on the horizon?

    Cheers,

    Steve.

Here's someone who posted on another forum

You're not mad to rate a late 80 TDi over an early A4. Part of your trouble will be to find one that has been lovingly maintained. They are getting scarce, especially ones in good condition.

They're frugal - you can expect at least 50mpg driven sensibly. Things to look out for are:

1/ Suspension prone to premature wearing, especially top-mounts and drop-links. Check for leaks on front struts. Check front tyres for even wear too.

2/ All electrics should work. If SE specification - check sunroof, windows, and mirrors all operate as they should. Central locking pumps can fail - so check it locks properly on all doors.

3/ Timing belt, water-pump and auxilliary belts need to be changed at 60k intervals. Ensure this has been done.

4/ Although it has a galvanised body - it can still rust, especially if poorly repaired. Check rear tailgate around window and front wings near sills and under wheel-arches.

5/ Seats are very supportive, but are prone to worn side bolsters on upholstery.

6/ Brakes can cause problems. Unusually, it only had solid discs for such a heavy car - it should have had vented discs on the front. Check for heat spots, excessive scoring. Could be a sign of a siezed or sticky caliper.

Apart from that they are great cars, fantastic in snow and comfortable on long journeys. High mileage shouldn't put you off - but look for a full-service history, or at the very least a bundle of receipts for work completed.

If I were you - I'd opt for the Avant version with roof-rails and 10 spoke alloys.

Thanks chaps. That's what I thought, but the wife was getting scared by the intergalatic mileage. It looks like the one I am intending to bid on has been well serviced and looked after.

I may or may not, go and look at it before bidding!

        Cheers,

        Steve.

if he's been paying £130 for a bearing the car will have had a lot of money spent on it mate.
I'll not be bidding against you on this one. I've got 2 running cars just now so i'll need to get myself a new broken one. I dunno how much more i'd pay for it than what it's at just now though. you'll know as well as anyone that you will get an 80 avant tdi with less miles on adtrader for well under a grand if you hang on. and then you can detail it like it's never been detailed before

Its seems quite common for them to have a severe hunting idle seen a few now,and from previous experience can be vary hard to find the problem.Martinjs had one for 4 months which was doing it when he bought it and never found what was causing it.Tryed allsorts.Very good cars otherwise.

Mine is approaching 200,000 miles. Engine was swapped out at 163,000 though as the alternator belt tensinoer siezed and dragged the cambelt round a few teeth. Rest of the car is going strong. You get all the usual suspension issues like an S2 (wishbone bushes and top mounts) but it is a lot cheaper to fix than the multilink setup on a similar vintage A4.

The hunting idle and juddering can be cured on the later cars by cutting the vehicle speed sensor wire to the ECU. It is not the ideal solution but unless you have cruise control it won't make any difference to it.

I just sold my 218k 80 TDi and the last one I had was over the 200k mark. It's a walk in the park for them - the car and engine just aren't stressed so providing they've been reasonably well looked after they just go on and on.. and even if they haven't they still manage to keep going!

                      Hunting at idle and juddering

Hi, I'm having difficulty in obtaining a wiring diagram for the engine management ecu to disconnect the wire mentioned above by Ben, can anybody give me a wiring schematic or the pin number on the ecu for the wire in question.

My car is an Audi 80 TDII 1994

                      thanks in advance

My first audi 80 tdi covered nearly 270,000 miles and was excellent and still be running if not for an unsimpathetic sprinter driver redesigning the back end. I echo the statement of the front suspension being the only real items that I replaced. Regular servicing aswell as that cambelt and it should be happy days. The only other problem I recall is the alternator tensioner being quite problematic but was eventually recified.
Ive applied the same logic to my a4 tdi and that is on 195,000 and going strong

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i have the dreaded judder too! can this be done on the earlier 80 TDi? Mines a K and i believe disconnecting the speed sensor from the gearbox cures but not ideal obviously!

My last daily was an Audi 80 TDI. It was as hard as nails, never went wrong, still had the original turbo and clocked 230,000 miles untill I decided it was time for a change.
