    customs charges

i have a question for those of you who buy parts from the US . is there a way of knowing how much duty you are likely to pay. for instance a item weighing 60 pounds and a value of £1300. i have bought stuff from the US before but have just paid the courrier when delivered. and what would i be paying vat and custom charges ie duty.
i have looked at hm revenue & custom but could not make any sence of it

You may have to pay duty, and you should have to pay VAT @ 17.5% on top of that too.

The amount of duty paid is a percentage of the 'value' of the item (not necessarily how much you paid, or the value marked on the package). The actual percentage depends on what the item is, as different categories of items attract duty at different rates.

From what I've read, a good rule of thumb for car parts is to expect to pay an extra 24% for the duty + VAT. You may also get screwed for an administration charge by the carrier if they pay your import costs up front.

On the other hand I've never been charged a penny on anything I've bought from the US. Yet ....

I've not bought car parts from the states but I buy a lot of guitars and get them shipped over here. I always work on 25% in taxes and duty and it's usually slightly under my estimate.
You can get lucky I've had some stuff come through with $1000+ values and not got stung for anything, but only last week I got stung for £15 on an item that was just £36.25 and there is not tax to pay on items under £35
It's kind of a luck of the draw thing

any ways of avoiding it for a single item? I've just purchased a brand new item in states and paid £350 delivered... If its labelled as a gift would they open it to look and charge duty?

Items marked as a gift are only exempt from duty if they have a value under £36 (normal level is £7).
