    F1 turbo era

Take a look at these turbo F1 engines, The renault engine uses the DPV system created by jean pierre (french engineer), a form of antilag which uses variable nozzles to control the air into the compressor instead of a simple throttle plate that most of the other teams use.

IIRC the throttle is located before the compressor and instead of a BOV (blow off valve), a POV (pop off valve) is used which vents any pressure over your desired boost pressure to atmosphere. With all airflow blocked to the compresssor blocked between gear changes the turbine/compressor shaft speed stays in the maximum efficiency area on your compressor map which gives instant throttle response. Apparently the renault drivers did`nt know what turbo lag was

Was thinking of trying this on my car as a little project.

For university we got a free tour of the donington F1 museum.... I'm not an F1 fan but the technology even back in the day was mental...

I'm sure they ran 3-4bar of boost as well?

Well if going by what you've done so far it should be of a high standard, it will be interesting to see something new being done.

Just been reading, the alfa romeo inline 1498cc 4 cyl made 885bhp at 10,500rpm and up to 1300bhp in qualifying with no fuel restrictions

They had variable boost control from the cockpit with a 4bar limit in the race and 5.5bar for qualifying....that's 1300bhp from a 1500cc 4cyl engine

I think that it was either Renault or BMW that had a 1500bhp engine in qualifying trim.

I remember the BMW in the Brabham, the BMW engineers looked at water injection to help with the detonation at high boost, then realised why inject a substense that dosent burn? no shiit sherlock!
They pulled some fuel data from the war used for the aircraft of the time. Mixed similar and hey presto reliable 1500 bhp!

Wasnt the BMW engine block the one that came from a humble road car begining ( a road car that had done 100K). I seem to remember it was left to age (rust) outside the BMW engine plant to stress relieve the structure. apparantly urininating on the block helped the process

Well the Focke Wolf 190D with the BMW engine had a variant that used laughing gas at high altitude to boost hp. those crafty germans

Reminds me of a 6R4 rallycross car my dads friend had. He reckons the boost knob on the dash could dial in anything from a season to 20 minutes

Well known story!!! It's still a rumour but most likely to be true - the older blocks have tighter grain structure, and the theory also follows that the engine has had all the stresses beaten out of it already, so it's done all the "settling down" that it's ever likely to do.

There used to be adverts in the American magazines for mail-order engines that featured "seasoned" blocks - the same idea applied as per the BMW blocks for F1, just a little larger than 1500cc...

But your S2 weighs nearly 2 tons whereas an F1 car weighs 1/2 faff all! (or about 500kg!)
