Top Speed Runs in S2

What is the highest top speed someone has done? Genuine top speed - not onthe gauges.

I am aiming to get the S2 to 200mph this year. Too much? maybe, but i did a vmax event at Bruntingthorpe - so tops speed in 1.6mile. In my B5 S4 i did 193 - same timing gear that EVO mag uses. THat was 7200rpm in 6th. My S2 has the s4 gearbox ansd revs to 8500. Will the S2 do that speed though?

i think the s2 aerodynamics will let it down more than anything else,might be wrong though

Nice work Doug, those are some mental figures. What is the Cd of the S2 vs. S4/RS4 Avant, this should give you an indication of how much more power is required to get to the magic 200. There are a few tricks you can use such as taping the pannel gaps and taking the wing mirrors off...

that same rs4 that did 202mph in germany (in the youtube link) could only do 191 on a previous day at the vmax event. Is the RS4 with widebody and fat tyres that bad at aerodynamics? the other RS4s on the same day as me did 175 and 178 IIRC - they are 450 and 470 bhp cars.

I'll be drpping the s2 to the ground with coilovers - i have had it upto 170 ish before nad it did not inspire confidence. The S4 got more planted the faster it went.

Anything over 190 on a logger is SERIOUSLY quick, getting your S4 to 193 is an amazing acheivement! Most i've ever nudged is 172mph on GPS and that seemed really quick (non S2)

Been in a few RUF's (inc' one round Chew Magna lakes nr Bristol which was converted for a paralysed driver - excellerator on a seperate telescopic wheel inside normal steering wheel and brake on a lever you push & pull!) The engineering that goes into their cars is amazing!

Aerodynamics could be an issue on the S2 i reckon, when you testing?

The S4 surprised me, my passengers, and most people there. I am not even sure i will do it again in the s4 as the distance, power, rev limiter and gearing seemed to be spot on to get the best figure on the day.

I don't know about the S2 Coupe but the S2 Avant and B5 RS4 share the same Cd. The Avant also shares the S4 feeling of being planted the faster it goes. I have taken mine to 165mph on GPS so far and it feels rock solid. I think this has something to do with the rear suspension setup.

@Doug, As you know I have had some lengthy conversations with Lucas about getting an Avant to hit the magic 200mph. We came to the conclusion that with around 550-600bhp with an appropriate 6th gear it should be possible to get there in a reasonable amount of time. Hence that discussion about what engine/turbo spec to go for when I was down at your place the other week.

Theoretically 400bhp is enough but it would require a huge distance.

The key will be finding the best 6th gear for the job. I have checked several options so far but don't have deep enough pockets to start stripping and rebuilding gearboxes.

either a higher 6th gear, but not stupid high like lucas, or in my case higher revs on the s4 box should do it. 7200rpm = 193 on the S4's 6th gear.

So what is the S4 cd to comapre it to.

Getting a proper front splitter and rear diffuser on the S2 would help a lot (and it would look pimp ). With your 600bhp beast, slamed to the floor and with a few tweaks I see no reason why you'd not get there, as mr. Avant says, just make sure that your max power and the RPM that corresponds to the desired speed are well matched to give it the best chance, no point being well beyond or behind the peak power figure, some special mapping would help you there.

You'll be a brave man to attemp 200mph in an S2 Coupé Doug. I've done a mere 163mph GPS a couple of times, and it didn't feel planted at all, although to be fair on the car the tracking wasn't spot on.

I'd recommend taking the rear wiper of this time.

that rear wiper would be off - i want to be able to hear when the front bumper goes under the car.
