I take it your from the UK, right?
I'm from Denmark, so I'd prefer a LHD car but thank you for the offer and good luck with the sale.

      Hi there.
Are you thinking of this red 1992 with only 99000km on the clock?

I'm very tempted by this one. The owner is a great guy and it seems like a good deal.
I have 2 "problems" at the moment. First of all, I still haven't found an insurancecompany with a good price offer on a S2. I've contacted a few and now just waiting for there answers and offers. Then there's is the problem about choosing the early S2 (3B) or the later S2 (ABY)..??

COnsequently Audi tuned the engine and boost levels safely for that, but it can be a worry when modifying to high torque levels.

The ABY has the much stronger 01E gearbox - its downside is twofold - extra weight from additional gear and not everyone likes the 'stiff/slow' way the 01E changes gear. The 01A is a bit lighter/quicker to change... BUt this is something you get used to... The ratios on the ABY and its torque levels are such that you arent exactly rowing about thru the gears to make progress. 6 gears are cooler !

The 6 speed gearbox, 01E, is heavier than the 01A.
From what I have read the 3B S2s are 100kg less than the ABY S2. Is that weight difference only from mechanical parts like the 01E gearbox or does the chassis have changes as well?

The same thing can be done on 3B but nothing like as easily as the RS2 engine is a derivative of the ABY... Direct Ignition etc.

The 3B fanatics will tell you the weak point of ABY is the coil-packs... Sure they can go bad, but replaicing those for original spec equipment every 120k miles is hardly a chore (though to be fair its expensive when it comes round).

ABY has stronger engine bearings and head gasket than 3B, but both are mechanically very reliable.

In some countries, 3B is advantageous as it can be legally deCATTed due its older age, but this may not apply where you live.

Engine upgrade from S2 to RS2 would be "nice" and one of the mods I prob would look into for sure. There are more than a few known issues with the coilpacks on the VW Golf R32 as well and I don't see that as a major issue. Buy some quality parts and be safe. As for the cats, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be legal to decat any car in Denmark.

        Lot's of good info, Paul.

        Thanks

I hate to be blunt but,

Paul is correct, I agree with him on his comments re the 3B and ABY. To cut to the chase, you should be looking for an ABY. No contest !

Don't want to start a debate on the merits of each, but on balance the ABY is significantly better if starting from zero.

          My tuppence worth.

          Kind regards.

Finaly someone who "dares" to speak his mind..!!

I hear what your saying and totally agree. Sounds like the ABY engined S2 is the way to go. Too bad they are so frickin hard to find these days.

Thank you for your input, Dave

                "IF" I ever find one...

Can't decide wether to keep looking for an ABY or just settle for a 3B. There's a real nice red, 3B with only 99000km on the clock with mint interieur for sale, half an hour from where I live. The car is all stock with no mods.

First of all I need to find a good offer on the insurance part before buying anything. The high original price is bit of a problem here in Denmark.

Yes that the one and yes he is a stand op guy.

if you are looking for an aby this one could be an option.
