I'm looking at buying an S2 here in Australia and while I haven’t seen the particular car yet (its on the other side of the country) I've just had an Audi specialist do an inspection on the car for me.
Apart from some minor items (2 interior lights & rear washer not working, scratched windscreen) most of it looks pretty good - as it should for a ’95 with 61,000km. It has a full service history and had timing + other belts + waterpump, etc, replaced about 3 years/20,000km ago.
I was just wondering if any of the following report items would ring alarm bells (or at least give me good reason to bargain the price down):
• Cylinder compression tests range between 145 and 130 Psi (3 cylinders are 140 Psi) – Psi’s converted to Atmospheres & Bar is :
130Psi = 8.846 Atm = 8.963 Bar
140Psi = 9.526 Atm = 9.652 Bar
145Psi = 9.866 Atm = 9.997 Bar
• “white smoke from exhaust when started cold and left to idle / possible worn valve stem seals. No evidence of smoking when driving under normal conditions” - The mechanic considered it minimal and not a big worry.
• He also noticed some slight bumping noises coming from the front end when going over some bumps. – I realise this could be any of quite a number of things (eg . 13 year old rubber bushes) and the mechanic didn’t see any evidence of front suspension damage but it did recently have some repair done to the centre section of the front spoiler and the spoiler has “scratches and 2 holes visible from under vehicle”. The dealer selling the car also tells me the previous owner recently took the car on a track day. … I don’t think I’ll worry too much about the suspension bumps - apart from a bargaining chip.
There are very few of these cars over here so it will be a case of this S2 (if we can agree on a price) or something else.
Cheers.
