The really early ones have the 5 spokes, old style headlamps and orange indicators.
Some have no roof bars too.
No idea about the gearbox though!

There were no 5-speeders build by Audi.

It's the same as the early Coupes. They were also delivered with the 5 spokers, old type headlights and orange blinkers. But with the new climate control, dooropeners, carbon etc.

Maybe that the Audi salesmanagement thought that we couldn't handle all the shocking changes from 3B to ABY at the same time.
