Ballpark windscreen replacement cost

Hi folks!

Just want to ask the good people of the forum (ok, all of you) about a very approximate cost for replacement of a windscreen? Not for my S2 but for my Golf as it happens.

Insurance is due for renewal and currently only TPFT for the old chugger, no glass insurance. I am tempted to change this but only if the premium increase and glass excess works out significantly better value than just paying for a broken screen to be replaced.

For the record, it's a "P" reg (Mk3) five door.

Any thoughts?

No idea on Golf's but had my S2 screen changed recently and they said the screen costs a little over £600.

Makes the £50 glass excess seem very reasonable.

Getting a quote has been a bit of a pig - most think you want to book for a replacement which isn't the case! Hmmmm well if £600 is the cost of screen replacements I can imagine that going to glass cover for this car would be worthwhile. It's the only car I don't have glass cover on at this time.

cant remember if they are bonded or not on a mk3?but i had a new front screen fitted to a 1985 coupe quattro a few years back from a place in surrey, it cost about £40!(not through insurance). i know some scrapyards sell windscreens that have been cut out of cars which are bonded in,that might be worth a go.

No. S2 is much more involved than a "simple" MK3 golf....

Martin, i'll try get hold of a friend of mine, he did a windscreen swap for me recently up in herts for the princely sum of 70 quid all in, i'll see what he can quote.

Dunno about pulling your leg, but they were certainly pulling the p*ss when I paid £568 on my first Coupe, "10" (yes TEN) years ago .

I also think you would be surprised how little extra it costs between TPFT and FC, might be worth asking that too, but if you can get it done for around the 70 quid mark, then just get the screen.....

At Spink - yes it is bonded on Mk3.

Pete I am certainly interested to know about that because I don't really feel a great need to comp insure this car - it's already dented and a little "off" here or there doesn't really worry me! Hence a screen replacement at that price would probably be about the same as the excess you'd pay and certainly less than excess plus the increased premium.

LHD, I know what you mean about going comp being only slightly more - I realise that the insurers are aiming to get to a point where only comp is available.
