just got a 2000 A6 today and the display for mpg etc is a bit crap. If I bought another set of clocks would it be like the coupes in that the mileage stays with the clocks? or does the ecu or something store the mileage and feed it to the clocks?
cheers

Cluster has its own lil computer on newer cars - location varies by vehicle... There are password protected dealer routines for setting up a NEW milometer ONCE so that it can be configured to follow on from the failure of an old one. I'm not 100% sure about this, but pretty sure I saw reference to it in the factory maintenance info for an A6 of that vintage.
mileage is kept in a number of different ecu's on the car so that when the clocks are changed you get the right mileage ..... at least that is the case on Volvo's which have over 40 ecu's per car
thanks lads. so am i safe to buy another set of clocks and stick them in do you think? don't fancy paying the dealer a silly amount of money to reset them mind you.
steve - all on my drive and my neighbour's drive. I officially admit it's gotten silly. 2 lads coming to see my 16v today so we'll see if that gets me down to 5 again
I got a P/X on the purple coupe with 250,000 miles on it that i picked up (just changed the fuel pump) so at least I took one away and brought another home.
It wasn't the blue one on ebay by the way. It's a black W reg 1.8T 20v Quattro saloon. Couple of things I need to tinker with but not much. and certainly not anything to frown about for the price I paid.
hang on..... here it is. (excuse my neighbour's manky door)

The mileage in a 2000 A6 is stored in the dash only. The immobiliser may also be in the dash, it may be seperate, but it's most likely to be in the dash. VAG Tacho should sort it out though. I'd give you a hand but you're feckin' miles away!
