I know, let's shaft the car owner some more...

This is from the Daily (hate) Mail but for once they don't blame single mother immigrant families for the problems. Basically, the story is that car tax for older cars will be based on emissions and not the flat rate as it is at the present. This Government need to have their head looked at, they are targeting the one thing that enables anyone outside of London to get to work and thus make money to keep this country solvent. Complete bunch of wanchors, the sooner the Labour Government are ousted the better, they've had their time. Who replaces them is almost less of an issue than just getting them on the other side of the house.

    Its instantly flawed though.
I assume they would have to use the emissions test result from the last MOT to work out what tax you would pay?

Going on that assumption, my Cossie would of been really good being taxed as a 1.2 Metro that the probe accidently got put into instead

Can't see the story but really its good news. I bet any of our well maintained vehicles will have the lowest emissions. Its people who don't maintain their cars properly that will have to worry. How many times have you been choked by the relatively modern car in front?
Just checked. CO actual 0.546, max limit 3.500. HC actual 179, max limit 1200!

It increasingly feels like the government have decided to see how far they can push the meek masses before they kick off en masse.
How else can the elite maintain their lifestyles through the global economic downturn...?
Unfortunately today's lazy society will take a whole lot more of this shafting before it can be really bothered to bite back.

Rather than slapping arbitrary taxes on cars based on engine size and emissions that don't bear any relation to how much a vehicle is used, how it's driven, etc. I've come up with a way that allows the Government to tax everyone individually based *exactly* on how much energy they burn. I'm going to call it "Fuel Tax" ....

.. oh hang on, don't we have that already?

Right on both counts but the biggest problem is that the masses won't join up and sort it out.

Tax on the fuel ...300% of it, or thereabouts - and it hurts higher consumption cars which is an artificial measure of road use, which technically should be the distance travelled (but don't get me started on road charging schemes).

People are consistently sucked into this trap of global warming and carbon emissions being inextricably linked.

(Note that global temperatures have fallen year on year for the past decade, by all three accepted measurements).

The excuse that it's "good for the environment" is false, and it's about time we stopped this sham from being perpetuated.

This is extremely frustrating news. Their aim with this tax change, as stated in parliament, is to stimulate the market to develop more co2 friendly cars.

The rather obvious flaw in the plan is their total lack of accounting for all the 'NEW' co2 emitted in the development and manufacture of brand new low co2 emission cars.

I do believe taxes should be raised for new high CO2 output cars, but to increase taxes on older cars is poor thinking. Imagine, if everyone decided to buy a new 'cheap' low co2 emitting car and 'throw' away their older car what does this do for the planet?

My guess is co2 emissions would rocket due to all the manufacture let alone consider the new raw oil energy cost in producing the new cars.....

Trouble is, the gov. would do very well out of corporation tax from all the successful car manufacturers. Which is why they don't actually intend to do any joined up thinking on co2 or peak oil.

Lloyd, I agree with your point and indeed have made it to many misinformed person who cares to discuss my "gas guzzling" car. They think that because they drive around in a nice new low CO2 car with a 1.2 engine that they're being environmentally conscious. My car has saved 7 others from being made over the years, that's a lot of 'carbon offsetting' in my book.

at my last MOT (and previous) with the S2, they have never done an emissions test on the s2, so i am the cleanest here haha although thats not true coz its smoking like a b1tch at the moment but thats not the point
