    Potential Purchase - Thoughts

Righty-ho. so i've been standing on the fringes watching all the fun and games on the forum have decided some time ago that an S2 is the future.

for passed year or so I have hummed and hawed about an S2 purchase and I've just decided that enough is enough. So I'm getting serious.

Found this S2 that's based in Aberdeen:

1996/M, S2 4wd Quattro, SILVER, 104000, Petrol, 2300cc, Coupe, Manual. With Air Conditioning, Electric Sunroof, Electric Windows, Centrol Locking, Alloy Wheels, ABS, Full Service History, New MOT,6 months Tax, Mint condition throughout.some small stone chips on bonnet, You won't find a better example of this Bahn Stormer, this car drives and feels if it just came out the Factory door. Genuine reason for selling, new company quattro.test pilot, canvassers, and dreamers need not apply. If you want a test drive, bring insurance proof.

So I sent him a cheeky little mail detailign some questions and got this is response:

Your questions are very understandable and your quite within your rights to ask them. So lets gets started.

The Air con was serviced/checked about 6 months ago during a major service. approx 300 miles ago
    And yes it's fully functional.

The timing belt was changed 150 miles ago, all receipts to prove. The car is completely standard, no re mapping or chipping.

As per the pads and discs, all changed during major service. 300 miles ago.

The car has a complete full service history from day ONE.

I am based in the Aberdeen area, I've owned the car for two years, and have only covered about 600 miles in that time.
I have been living abroad in Abu Dhabi for the past 12 years, and always needed a car when I returned. I was generally away for 5/6months at a time. During that time, a friend would take the car out once a week (If Dry) just to lubricate the engine and turn the wheels etc etc.

The History of the car, is a follows. Owned by Judge John Barr of Dumfries for over 5 years, stolen and recovered in Leeds 1 year later. Next owner lived in the Leeds area, name providede in log book. Now I am the proud owner.

    Reckon it's a go-er?

Sorry if this isn't the section, I didn't think For Sale was the right areas since I'm not pimping it.

Translation:That'll teach you not to read through before you start, now you are looking at scarey photos of the inside of a gearbox.

That one has been up for sale for a little while - was originally asking £6k for it - so you might be able to knock then down a bit further

It certainly looks good in the pictures - if I was anywhere near Aberdeen I would be taking a look at her - based purely on the photos it looks like one of the better ones up for sale at the moment IMHO

Looks a nice standard car but price does seem a little steep especially in todays climate.

Noticed a horse box in the background, has it be used as a tow vehicle at all?.i'd check for signs of tow bar. Also, grey on grey interior certainly not top of the list for desirability. Worth looking into that stolen/recovered story bit more as well, imagine a car with half that miles yet had still been broken into and ramped stupid by some young scallies...

600 miles in last 2 years?! Some of which sounds likes his mate has had a jolly down the shops.

Certainly not trying to put you off, she looks a silver gem but ask the questions and offer accordingly if you decide to go for it! good luck

Word of advice. This guys posts last year on audifans.net did not add up..
He bought my mate Paulgo's old cq20v a couple of years ago, then "upgraded" it with "twin" garrets .

I fitted twin Garrets, with a homemade downpipe, had it rolling tested, and it smacked out at 345BHP at the back end. Just wanted to see if it could handle it. done about 500 or so miles on it, and not a drop of water or oil was used. Only problem was the downpipe. I asked for 355 german S/S. All I got was cheap 280 british stainless. Course with that sort of heat it eventually fell apart. I have all the drawings if anyone is interested. It's a tight squeeze but it's worth it, if you want the speed. The car was eventually put back to standard, with Pauls original exhaust. Road tested again to 243 BHP.
He then bought this silver S2 above and sold the cq20v advertised in the autotrader as an S2, which it clearly wasn't. It was a stock 7A, 240bhp?? yeah righty ohh.
When asked about the S2, a couple of posts didn't add up.

This new 96 S2 has 86k on the clock, last owner was a Sheriff in Dumfries.

I bought my S2 down your neck of the woods, Durham to be exact. It was a one owner car from new, but was stolen & recovered by some outfit in Leeds, who passed it on to the body shop in Durham and the guy I bought it from repaired the damge. I've had it professionally checked out since I brought her home, and she came out with flying colours,

                I'm in the far east
                I'm in the middle east
When asked to explain all this, he disappeared.
Steve (Knightrider) and Eric (EricD) will probably remember it.

It was also in a Scottish newspaper nicely spotted by a fans user.

The article was in the local paper "the press and journal". As for the car i have seen it in person once about 4 months ago it was in good condition when i saw it in a friends a garage getting some work done on it. It's not worth 6k maybe 4.5k IMHO.

There is a pearl white Avant in Aberdeen in mint condition, just need to find out where the owner lives and make him an offer

                      Jas11n,

                      Very impressive recall abilities.

                      Handy for everyone.

                      Kind regards.

                        Thanks for the info guys.

I mailed him again with a few more questions and got this reply:

                        Andy

She was listed as Cat D, there was damage to the passenger door, when it was forced open, that's the information given to me at the time. All repairs were carried out, to perfection.

The reason for my parting is quite simple. I've taken a managerial position in Aberdeen, which comes with a brand new Audi A4 2lt TDI. So I revert back to my old ways, and take her out at the week ends (If Dry ) I will be honest with you I really don't want to sell her, but it's a shame she not getting used to her full potential. She does have some small stone chips on the bonnet, which If I was keeping her, would get repaired, but haven't the time now.
                        Len Stalker-Clarke

I'm afraid if it's Cat D then the dirrence between his asking price and what I would be looking to offer would to be too great to over come.

It is sad really as I'm now getting rather desperate for S2-goodness.

Thanks to everyone for their input, particulaly Jas; fantastic digging there.
