Good time to buy...bad to sell...

As many of you know the RS2 has gone and the RS2 spec S2 avant is being broken up as spares ... on a slightly happier note a replacement `avant` is currently being sort some of the prices when i first started looking were a little more than i ideally wanted to really spend on what at the end of the day is a `luxury` item as we have other cars to use... S4 RS4 and RS6 s have all been looked into but the last 2 weeks have seen some real movement... example "03" with 65k!!!
    Audi RS6 "03" with 65k.
mugello blue with silver leather. "4 new tyres , new brakes , new cat back miltek !!! new dv's.

Could do with a little tlc but it's a nice car .

£15500 ........ shame its a saloon or it would be sitting on the drive...
S2 + RS2 yep ive had a few love em... Laser red S2 avant... Brilliant black lhd RS2... Polar silver RS2... RS blau RS2... CheeRS Al

A few folks have dicsussed this on the forum recently and it's sacry what you can get for your money but remember an 03 RS6 at £15-20k has the same running costs as it did 5 years ago.

I also like the sound of something like an RS4/6 sitting on my drive but the running costs or just the fuel cost must be frightening!!!

i have heard/seen the RS6's like to munch their way throught gearboxes though, a bit surprising Audi's normally have mega tough gearboxes

Yep the RS6 gearbox isnt a favourite of mine tbh... anyway its just as an example John B5 S4 or RS4 avant have been my main hunting ground (being swayed more towards the S4 by Mr H ) that is of course unless `the right RS2` turns up for sale

All big engined cars are cheap as chips these days. A friend of mine wants to go looking at 1.6 litre saloons this weekend and to my horror i found a 1.6 A4 is worth more than a 4.2 A8 with the same age and mileage

Funny how you say that, i was also looking of going down the RS4 route, but i really like my S2 and if there is heaps of help on here if you have any problems, plus the forum is a good laugh.

Also there is nothing on the road thats sounds as good as the S2/RS2 IMO!!!

I reckon (hope) about as much on top of a good S4 as it would cost to go for a real RS4 instead, plus the time and inconvenience of having the car off the road while it was being uprated. And you're left with a car with worse residuals than a standard S4. On the plus side it's uber-stealth performance whereas an RS4 kind of shouts RAPID!

Sounds like I've thought about this a bit doesn't it... :mischeif:

                RS2 upgrade or S4... ?

Id think i'd take the s4 with upgrades instead of the rs4.

£ 5,900 is simply despicably cheap. That is less than 1/5th of what they cost across the North Sea:

This one has some RS4 bits, stock B5 S4's hover around £ 31,000

£15500 isn't bad for a RS6... That is, let's see... £75,500 less than what they cost here:

The short answer, Al, is "yes" it's a good time to buy and a bad time to sell, IMHO.

S4 B5 prices have continued to slip in the last year, but RS6 C5 prices have really plummeted, despite many pundits speculating that the launch of the new RS6 would see a renewed interest in the "old" model and actually push the prices back up. (there was actually a high mileage RS6 on Pistonheads recently at £12,750)

Clearly, the current price levels have been influenced by "the credit crunch", high fuel prices, and (at least in the case of the RS6) the increases in road tax. However, I'd be surprised if prices recover as I cant see fuel or road tax ever coming back down and depreciation just carries on its dirty work....

Funnily enough, I have been sorely tempted by an RS6 and still have my "RS2 moments" but to have either of those on my drive I'd have to sell the S2 or S4 and I cant see me ever parting with those bad boys...

As much as I love the RS6 and the fantastic growl from the 4.2 V8, it's really a motorway muncher, GT, and I think I'd soon miss the more nimble S2 and S4. That all said, you get a hell of a lot of car for your money at current prices.

The other weak point on the RS6 is the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) system, a known problem which Audi have not yet solved, but is easily fixed - just make sure you budget another £1,500 to have it replaced if it hasnt had a proper fix.

As for the B5 RS4 vs modded S4 debate, I could write a book on it. They both have their merits but the starting point with this one is if you dont like "estate cars" then it's a no brainer.
                      Past: S2 ABY coupe RS2 spec with lots of mods, S4 B5 saloon, RS6 C5 saloon, S8 D2 FL, RS4 B7 saloon, S4 B6 avant

                      Present: S4 B8 avant, MRC Stage 2

I think the S4 saloon is ugly as hell, no doubt it shifts though when tuned. PPC did a feature on Doug's S4 last month and the price for them is as low as 3-4k!

Be an B5 RS4 for me. I've looked into it quite a bit and they are now within my price reach. It would mean the end of the S2 but I've got unfinished business there 1st

My ultimate choice though would be a 20v stroker URQ

For about the first time the RS2 makes sense if you want a performance audi. Pre 2001 re tax, fuel consumption just as good (or bad) as B5 RS4 V8 S4 RS6, lower depreciation than the above mentioned and in my case all the major age related jobs are done.
