There's a recent forum member named "saltinot" that's building an RS2 clone from an S2 body that he bought over in Germany. I remember reading that he has inquired on how to federalize it though it seemed unlikely he would succeed but he wasn't too bothered as he would just use it as a track car.
There's also another guy in WisconsinI think who built a heavily modified white coupe from a coupe chassis that was already federalized. Can't remember his forum name and haven't seen him around here for ages...
i think mr nitti is asking if there are any "normal" 3b or aby S2's already over there. i.e. cars that originally started out as S2's -not modified "standard" coupes or similar.
from this he can determine which specific modifications have to be carried out to satisfy regulations on his own car. specifically drivers airbags/catalytic converters/side impact strengthening bars.
without confusing things too much would an earlier car need to have a "working" drivers airbag retrofitted. also, would a cat have to be fitted.
it could be that the small number of s2's over there are later models that actually came with airbags and other upgrades as standard.
i know its a bit more complicated over there but in uk mot testers can only check for things that were fitted to the vehicle when it left the factory.(even things like seat belts only became compulsory in the 60's). as safety standards improved over the years existing cars don't require things to be retrofitted to pass an mot.
Afaik from all the posts people keep putting up on here there was never any s2's over in america that are genuine one's.
There have been S2's brought over but were only used on Rally races. There is one RS2 that was brought over but unsure what it took for that car to be registered. If there are S2's on the road not a lot of info on them to share. Your definitive answers will be given by the DOT and State in which you plan to arrive and register the vehicle during your stay there.
For reference Coupes were sent over in two years 90-91
later 1990 models came with driver airbag. 1991 models standard driver airbag. Both models had side impact bars and rear/front 2pc rebar DOT approved bumpers.
understood that there were never any "original" S2's actually sold new in the USA but just trying to find out if any have already been imported in previously. for sure the easiest route for people living in USA is probably to convert a "standard" car to S2/RS2 spec and i'm sure there's some awesome examples.
mr nitti's problem is he already owns a low mileage/top condition S2 that he won't give up too easy!!! like most of us on here it's his pride and joy that he's already put lots of time/effort/money into it and doesn't really want to start again from scratch.
without opening up a huge can of worms including all the variants of modified cars it would cut to the chase to find out if there are ANY "original" S2's imported in the USA, which year is the car and what specifically had to be done do satisfy regulations. it may be that regulations aren't as strict for the earlier cars that didn't have the upgrades (airbags) of later models.
from reading previous posts i don't think there are going to be many (if any) "original" S2 imports over there but just ONE will answer a lot of questions and be much more relevant to mr nitti's problem.

Any car that is not on the list must have a petition put in for it by a registered importer - I have tried contacting loads of supposed registered importers in USA but they've nearly all been dead ends - just one is due to get back to me, the others are either shut down or wrong numbers.....would be wicked to actually have a conversation with someone who knows what they are talking about! Preferably a RI who has petitioned for a non conforming vehicle before....
This was my boss and I know for a fact if he was around today he would be driving a sick ABY armour plated S2 1500 bhp....

have a look at this link of a s2 clone for sale in USA - as it says on the advert "The Audi S2 and RS2 were never imported to the states." But maybe there is one out there......I wonder if anyone has petitioned for an S2 and failed.....
iirc the owner of that is a member on here and at one point i think it had a carbon hood on it, there was pictures of him driving it with his missus and then shots of her leaning on the bonnet?
IIRC this car was originally built back in new york or somewhere around that way in '06 and was then sold on ebay a while later with a few "problems"..looks like this guy picked it up...there are a few ersatz (copies) of S2's around...some in the US and some in Canada....but officially none we imported...
My friend waorks in few ports in NJ. He is an audi guy, he has seen 3 orig. s2 coupe's imported here, but never rs2.
It's hard to say how these s2 have beed legalized, but probably have became "Audi Coupe's" , that's why their owners don't want to be "exposed". And that's why RS2 (avant) is bigger PITA, as we have never gotten any B4 avant here.
Also, my friend saw what the customs do with non-wanted stuff in The States, so people are just scared to bring something what could be basicaly losen.
