    Group B collection up for auction

    Some nice stuff going on the block. Anyone wish to float me a loan for the '84 Group B?? Oh......and maybe a little more for the 037 so the '84 won't get lonely in the garage.

      Oh this again - can't help but get a bit moist looking at some of those.......

      Note the wacky IM on that S1 - and the ten fuel injectors - and the waterworks plumbing up and over to the bulkhead en route to the rear radiator - and the wacky boost control lines... Rigged up to a manual knob on the dash labelled 'boost' via something... And the boost guage goes to 2.5bar. Not a MAF in sight either. Rally cars of this era look a bit agricultural from the outside sometimes but I bet that goes like mad.

      Two questions --->
      1 - What possesses someone to start on such a collection, and all the pain and cost of keeping them in the garage ?
      2 - Then what possesses them to flog the lot in one mahoosive batch ?

      SOrry three question --->
      3 - Whats the reserve price (out of pure interest) ?

        Based on the picture, I have the following questions: -

        1. GIMME GIMME GIMME
        2. How has that 'wacky' IM not exploded with that Mahoosive turbo and such nasty welding?
        3. what type of wastegate is used and why is the vac pipe connected? (inverse of the first qu. all new members ask I guess)
        5. What happened to qu.4?
        6. is the bar between the TB and the outlet of the IC to stop that hose blowing clean off?
        7. Seriously - GIMME GIMME GIMME

        Cheers n

          1 - I saw it 1st

          2 - Fuctifino

          3 - Variant of ours... Applying BOOST to the upper chamber is another way to keep the WG closed... Remember that applying to the lower chamber wants to open the WG. The WR or MB/MC engines ran like this weird way - never studied the control plumbing but it is probably something to think about - a whole unexplored dimension of WG control for the S2 !

          6 - Mmmmmmm

          7 - Seriously - I saw it 1st..........

            These are part (there are more not listed, maybe not for sale) of a collection by 2 investors, one american one english, they are all at David Sutton where he is under contract to store them and maintaing them. A few of the Audis have engines that have passed through my hands.

                Nice work if you can get it Aelred

                Can you share any insight on the WG control pipework - I presume its a fairly low-tech but ingenious affair with some pneumatic controls, valves and such ?

                  Quite simple and primitive.

                  Wastegate spring is weak. Driver can adjust the boost via a mechanical valve control on the dash which it fed by the inlet pressure going to the top chamber of the WG, therefore creating resistance against the diaphragm lifting.

                  Turbosmart sell a manual in car control very similar to this.
                  Of course these days electronic ones are more the norm.

                        that pikes peak car is it a genuin car as i thought there was only one of them in the audi musium. i would love that car but with 15 injectors the fuel bill would match the price of the car

                          Thats a incredible collection of cars....actually seen several run first time round in the Group B era and then again years later at Goodwood and Silverstone historic event on the rallycross track.

                          Out of all of them, I'd take the PP Quattro or the E2

                          Whats with the odd intake on the shorty, seems to have a trumpet on the elbow of the intacke just before the turbo - Aelred, any info on that you can share? Also, with the long coolant circuit on the E2/PP any idea how much coolant was required? must have been tons
