    1. Actually, the huge decommissioning costs of modern nuclear power facilities are a bit of a myth. In fact most of the facility does not become contaminated and therefore most metal and many other materials can be recycled.

This means that the decommissioning costs, including the disposal of associated nuclear wastes contribute only a small amount to the total cost of the electricity the facility generates.

    2. The half life is not of course the time to be safe. However that said, the half life of components that have been exposed to neutron bombardment and now have radioactive isotopes are mainly only a couple of years - meaning they are completely safe after around 50 years - that is an acceptable period. The exception to this is of course C14 which has a half life of over 5000 years

    3. What we should have as well as more modern nuclear facilities is wind power! The only problem with wind farms is the f@cking NIMBY attitude of liberal middle Britain. These are the same people who buy a house near Stanstead airport and the have the audacity to complain about the f@cking noise These people need to have reason and common sense injected into the void between their ears - preferably using a captive bolt gun!

Sheesh, if people had complained like this 200 years ago, the industrial revolution would have never happened because water wheels and windmills were just too noisy WHAT F@CKING NOISE? There are a few wind turbines in this area and I cannot hear the ******s even when I turn my engine off and listen really carefully. That doesn't stop the inbred villagers campaining to not have them built in the middle of bloody nowhere.

When you fly over the English Channel from Brussels to London City, the most amazing site is seeing the 30 turbine offshore wind farm There are many hundreds of turbines planned and sanctioned in tens of offshore sites and I say lets have them offshore and onshore as well, as they are the way forward!

    Cheers n

    Si

P.S. The sooner we embrace wind, wave, water and nuclear energy the sooner we can stop burning oil in power stations and turn it into super unleaded so spread the word brothers

You must have some sort of blackbox that connects this solar system in thru your meter so that its somehow phase aligned...

We have a large south facing roof at the rear of the house - I've never done the maths on how long it would take for solar panels to pay for themselves, but it sure would be nice to be somewhat independent of the power company. A spreadsheet for a quiet night that one

You are right Paul, there is the extra complexity of phasing the wind power to the grid. The Municipal power company I work for, just started there first wind farm. I am on the General Construction side, not the electrical construction side, so the phasing is a little above my head.

For the solar panels it is little simplier. The DC produced by the panel is converted by an inverter into AC, and then just wired to the main panel with a 30 amp circuit breaker. Panels are made by Sunpower, USA made, and the inverter is made by the Germans.

The initial cost was about the same as an upscale new car. A little less than $38 USD. The panels are the most producing on the market at the present time, and the inverter is one of the better ones.

With just the wife and I, it will probably take a long while to pay off. If the kids were still living at home, it would pay off sooner. But we will be able to reduce the natural gas costs, and then there is just something about not having to pay the bast..ds any money.

With the wife retired, and I am going to in a couple of years, we don't really have any major expense left in our lives. Besides, the panels are doing better investment wise than the financial markets.

Ahh cool then... That inverter must be phase sync'd to the grid input, if its wired in such a way that your meter goes backwards on a sunny day and you have more supply than demand. Clever stuff... But that is a significant whack of money to shell out. Wow...
