Persuade me to keep my S2, please...

    Hi,

I'm getting the three year itch and I'm starting to look at replacing my 1994 S2 Avant ABY (Ruby red with cream leather interior A/C etc.) with something else. Alternatives I'm considering are:

    Alfa 156
    Audi A4 1.8T
    Skoda Octavia VRS
    Saab 900 Turbo

Something is telling me that I'd be making a HUGE mistake but I need persuading. So, why should I keep my S2 despite it being expensive to run and always needing something (albeit very minor) doing to it to keep it in tip-top condition?

    Help.

Do you seriously think those other cars will be significantly cheaper to run ?
With the exception of the Skoda maybe for cheap parts - the Octavia is same platform as Audi A6 / VW Passat I think.

Ask yourself which car is going to provide the most fun and practicality all in the same 'sleeper' package.

Come on! None of those cars even come close.

Unless you want a boring daily driver, don't change it and work hard to rectify and annoying niggles...

        Cheers,

People always seem to regret selling an S2. So don't do it - you will never forgive yourself.

              Keep your S2

Do what you've always wanted to do to it. None of those cars will be even 50% as good

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'll pull my finger out, sort the little niggles and keep it.

Just out of interest... has anyone regretably sold their S2 but then returned to buy another one?

Alfa 156 - Not as full of italian brio as they'd have you believe. Pretty, but pretty unreliable.

Audi A4 1.8T - This was my choice over an S2, very refined in comparison (plenty on here would say 'dull', I'd disagree) - with quattro still handle well, but you'll take a big performance hit. If you're fine with that I have a 'W' facelift 1.8tqs avant for sale (the runout edition with 180bhp, but ready for more!).

Skoda Octavia VRS - Based on the Golf / Bora (the Superb is the Passat/A6 chassis) 180bhp 1.8T from the Seat Leon. 2 wheel drive with aggressive traction control? No thanks. Otherwise, ok in an under the radar, don't give a cr.p about the badge kind of way.

Saab 900 Turbo - Do you mean post '94? If so, 1 word: Vectra.

In summary, stick with the S2 (or if you're really bored with it, and happy to buy something with less power, buy my A4!)

I have done it 4 times=) first one i sold and bought an S3, sold that after a while as the 5 pot itch started to grow, got the inca orange one but sold that 2 and got another bloody S3 wich i had sold in 6 days=) then i got a really nice Civic type R with alot of money put into it ( i know im a pillock for even thinking it could compete with a quattro) After that i got another S2 and a urquattro both were in need of quite a bit of TLC so i swapped them for a really cool 2002 B6 A4 1,8T quattro with i sold because yet again i wanted an S2. so here i am with My S2 again but this time it´s for keeps as i know now that i will regret selling and this one is truly a minter.

So my 2p are: Keep your beloved S2 as NONE of the other cars can compete with either power, looks, handling, sound, or keeping their value.

                            Fish's track record

                            proves the point.

Fish, as I mentioned in your other thread, you were very lucky to pick up such a nice one, (your current car), your orange one was lovely as well.

Tobodestroyer you may not be so lucky ! ? Keep yours.

Why do you think you need to sell it, bored, or other man's grass seems greener ?

                            Kind regards.

The only thing worth replacing an S2 with, is an RS2, or S4/RS4/S6/RS6. Prices for these are falling daily if you really do want rid of your S2 for something else. Nothing in the list you put up comes remotely close in my opinion.
