S2- what do i need for more power?

Hi, I've just got myself an early S2 and i want more power!

The engine has to come apart to do the head gasket, so while its open, I was thinking I'd be better off fitting uprated parts ready for any future upgrades.

    So, anyone got any advice?

I'd like 400bhp with reliability, so what do i need?

    Cheers,

    Simon

400hp is more than a RS2 setup will do, you will need a bigger turbo, search for

    3071

and you'll find a lot of information..

garrett gt 3071 or 3076 turbo
      new rods
maybe change the piston rings and refirbish little
      upgraded clutch
vems ecu or a homefried chip
bigger ic (i would also go for wagner tuning inlet, reversed, 034motorsport has this stuff)
      3" exhaust with race catalyst
      bigger injectors and fuelpump
i would also port and polish the head (not needed but why not when it is apart?, rev high? titanium retainers and stiffer valve springs)
      7a exhaust cam/ catcams

      that is a nice summary.

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

Thanks for the welcome and info

I'm UK based and the car is a '91 model so i don't need the cat.

I've messed about with cars for years so I know nothing is cheap, but the car was cheap to start with so I'm prepared for some big bills.

I've normally had VWs and BMWs in the past, so i haven't a clue where to source the correct bits.

What places/companies would you recommend for the parts i'll need?

              Ta

VAG parts are very good, GSF aren't bad either. It helps that you have been into VW's as there's quite a few similarities in the way these cars are put together.
                1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.
                1992 C4 2.8 Avant quattro
                1994 MTM RS2.
                1998 B5 TDI quattro Sport.
                2000 B5 TQS.

400 is easy. unless you want to make lots of torque.

its all about moving the power up the rev range.

                  standard engine with metal Gasket.
rods are a good comfort zone mod.
bigger turbo. its about compromise and opinion. i run s61 it will make 400hp at about 1.25bar.
standard IC is on limit but will do it.
                  exhaust 3" a must.
big cone filter to fit big turbo.
at least a 440cc injector to be in the zone.
a bigger fuel pump to keep the DC low.
i run vems, motronic or other will do it also.

if you want 400 hp with low down you need higher spec stuff as

                  1. the torque with a smaller turbo and higher boost will be more.
                  2. itll be turning into a fireball so an intercooler becomes needed.

i made 321hp at 5krpm with standard everything except turbo and exhast. it was starting to run toward 13:1 at the time so egt on the up so i aborted. if it held the torque at 325 as it was till 7k or so and i expect it would thats about the 430hp mark.

                  hope that helps

3k is needed in the pocket i say.
                  and 1k for brakes
