    034 Coilpack upgrade

hey all, my CQ has been suffering from some serious miss firing and as im on such a tight buget iv messed around with the std coil packs on my ABY, however with no lasting repair.

its time to step it up a notch and sort it out because its taking all the fun out of driving it.

i have searched around and came across the (034 High Output DIS Coil w/Built in Driver) on the 034 web site and recon i could make theses work how ever i havent been able to rule out the pos drivers that are bolted to the bulk head, with out spares to swap out and test im not sure what to do.

034 do a complete kit ready to plug and play but its around 500 pounds GB but they do seperate coil packs with built in drivers as i said above that seem to be the dogs bo***x

http://www.034motorsport.com/product...roducts_id=277 (this is the link to the single coil packs i have been looking at)

Is any1 already running them? or know if they can be run along side the drivers bolted to the bulk head or would they be ok to be removed and bypassed with coils having there own drivers?

any help or ideas would be great

    Cheers all
    Lukas

I think you will find that there are several people here running the 034 HO coil packs (with built in drivers). The kit with 5 coil packs, the wiring harness and the coil to plug leads is US$675:

For mounting, you want them AWAY from the heat of the turbo. There is typically room on the intake side of the engine, at the firewall.

There is a complete thread on these 034 HO coils here in the forum. Have a look.

Yea i know iv seen the complete kit already but my problem is the cash flow and its more expensive to buy the full kit instead of buyin the seperate coils and wiring them in myself.

and i wanted to know if any one else has already done this and what the results were?

        If it was me,

I'd get a loan of a spare, known to be working, POS unit before going down the coil replacement route?

Also have you checked the plugs and also the part that goes from the coil packs down to the plug itself.

Recent subject of a group buy on here?

Borrowing good second hand bits is a quicker and less expensive method of track and trace, but easier said than done I know, if no one is close to you.

Just my tuppence worth, HTH somewhat.

        Kind regards.

Do POS's cause intermitant faults, like really hot day misfire at WOT above 4000 revs?, my coil packs look very 'how's ya father' with breaking down insulation, and burnt exposed wires.
I want to retain the OEM look as far as possible and was considering biting the bullett and getting a new set of OEM coils from BERU, how much are POS's?, the 1.8 coil conversion cant handle heat as well AFAIK, and requires the lid left off the coil pack cover., the HO coils are the best technical solution but not if you like OEM look, is that about the limit of our options?

The reason that a "whack" might work is there are small wires inside the POS that can break and a whack might bring them back into (temporary) contact. See below:

iv replaced plugs, long rubber plug boots and also moved the coils away from over head and built a frame to carry the coils next to the abs pump and run a set of Vw VR6 ht leads to the plugs with still no joy

so it has to be either the pos on the bulk head or the coils? or maybe the ecu not sending a good enough signal to the pos

but i have no spares to try and test
                so its driving me crazy

it missis all the time alittle but really bad when under boost.

any 1 out there in yorkshire area with a set of spare pos units i could borrow and try for a day?

You can use a brown Hitachi V6 "351" POS to test out your theory of a wonky POS channel. (Probably a dime a dozen at your local breakers). You can also swap your paired POS connections from one POS to the other to see if the miss moves cylinders (checking which cylinder is missing by pulling the injector electrical connections one at a time to see which one doesn't make the idle get worse). If the miss moves, it's the POS, if it stays on the same cylinder, it's that cylinder's coil. If it is the POS, there is one spare POS channel on the 4/5 POS that you can use.

This is all part of the missing and hesitation diagnostic procedure:

                            034 Motorsport Coil Pack Conversion

                            Hi,

I converted my RHD S6 to the 034 Motorsport High output coil packs about a year ago and it works exceptionally well. It is not a straightforward swap as there is a need to make a suitable bracket to hold the coil packs securely and the need to have custom spark plug leads, as well as a few other minor modifications but it looks good when finished, etc. If my car were LHD it would have been far easier.

I have a spare bracket if needed. (Custom made out of laser cut stainless steel and it fits perfectly) I posted some pictures of the conversion in the S2 forum and in my web log. ( http://brain-dead-in-tokuyama.blogspot.com (You will a have to go through a five pages to get to the pictures, etc.))

I can post more pictures when I get back to England if you are interested. (Working in Japan!)

                            Regards,

                            Andy H.
