Yes, I caught some of that, and though, bah, it's only the Americans, not my problem. Then a little voice in the back of my head reminded me we are ONE TRILLION pounds in debt the last time they looked.... (efa - http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/dealwithdebt/nationaldebt.html )
It has all got to come from somewhere, we are all living on the never never including the stoopid government.
They should be telling everyone to SAVE money not bloody spend it!
I give up.

The USA is owned in main by China, Japan (ironic!) and teh 'oil producing states'... no wonder the Americans want to keep Iraq/Iran under control, a large chunk of their counrty is owned by the possible fallout of a big war in that region. D'oh.
Looking at the figures yesterday, the USA debt is about 4 times bigger than ours but they're population is 5 times larger so we're a bit bugered there!

and the actual national debt figures are fiddled too.. when you consider all the debt to private companies through the PFI / PPP scams.... if you consider that lot too then it really gets scary, especially when you stop to consider what has actually changed in society for a public expenditure of approx £27,000 per capita since 1997.
My advice - don't think about it or you'll end up swinging from a light fitting.

If you're a consumer, then yes (in the short term).
I wouldn't count on that. People will be surprised how many companies put their prices up by 2.5% on monday to counter-act that VAT reduction, including the majority of big retailers.
Imagine the expense of having to print new labels for every thing in every shop in the country...
I take it last night was the last time I'll ever manage to fill (from just on the red) my S2 with Super Unleaded for just £38 then?

I did some xmas shopping in Tesco and got a 5p/litre off voucher. Super Unleaded is only 94.9 for now anyway.
42.25 litres @ 94.9 P/L = £40.10
-£2.10 for the promotion - £38.00
S2 Avant fuel tank is 63 litres isn't it?

Once again I will be worse off. Reducing VAT by 2.5% makes absolutily no difference to me as thanks to all the price rises my disposable income has virtually vanished. But putting anything on fuel or car related hits me hard and therfore makes me worse off as I expect most of us will be.
Lets face it the government will only do something to benefit themselves, they couldn't care a monkeys about the rest of us?!!
