bhp on an 18 year old s2

    hi,
i have an s2 that is 18 years old and has been serviced regular through out it's life it's done 117000 miles, at the moment it's standard when it was new it produced 220bhp i just wondered if after all them years it would still be producing 220bhp. i am looking at tuning it but it's no good if it's done on power to begin with. what do you boys reckon.
    cheers

If everything is working correctly then at that mileage it should still be producing at least 220 BHP, it's not uncommon for well serviced VAG car's to be up on power very slightly if in tip top mechanical condition. As you say it needs to be running properly before you start thinking of increasing the power. Do you have a boost gauge? Then at least you can see if making the right sort of pressure levels.

yeah totally agree, as long as the intake plmbing is in good shape and the vac lines too then should be no reason to suggest it would be down. When i had my homefry done 5yrs ago on mine, it managed a stock run on the rollers first at 220bhp and 228ft/lbs torque, straight out the brochure

I think you can get a power run done on local 4 wheel rolling road for about £50 if yu wanted to check...

      Good luck

With 130k on my standard ABY produced 240bhp, with 150k and an exhaust 260bhp, a few more toys and a remap gave me 297bhp. Hoping for 3xx now as there's a few more toys to add to the equation... Still on the standard 165k engine and turbo with no problems.

Get the car fully serviced and checked over by a specialist like MRC. Especially get the boost hoses pressure checked as this is a weak area, including the breather system. New fully synth oil, plugs, clean the MAF, check the DV... Then get it on the rolling road after that and check fuelling and boost and then go play with the tuning! Glad to see your approaching things in the right way, as you say no point tuning until you know it's solid.

i've got it booked in at a local spot 53 quid for a power run to check fuelling, boost, bhp it's had everything checked i just need to service it. i've seen quite afew people who have these homefry chips fitted, who does them and how much does it cost and what gains can i expect, does getting a chip fitted mean it's been re-mapped or do i get the chip fitted and re-mapping is something that is done afterwards.

No homefries for a 3B AFAIK yet, MRC will fit your chip, test boost hoses and give the car a once over, Doug knows his S2s. No point getting a power run until you're certain that the boost hoses are holding air properly, if they're old and leaky it'll run down on power and the AFRs will be <10:1 instead of 12:1. You'll just waste £53. You need to get a boost leak test done, basically bung the MAF hose and pressureise the whole system and listen for leaks! Works miracles! Where abouts are you? Might be someone local who can help.
