    power delivery on an s2

    hello,
i have a question regarding the power delivery on an s2, when the turbo starts to boost should it feel harsh and put in the back if your seat. I ask because the power delivery on mine feels smooth, it feels quick but i don't have another s2 to compare it to. i've had turbo cars before a wrx impreza and a saph cosworth and when the turbo started boosting on them you noticed it. it's been to a garage for a boost leak check and a had the codes read, no fault came up on either. any thoughts would be appreciated
    cheers

Is it chipped? I had mine from standard and it felt ok. Then i went out for a real time map with MRC, mihnea pushed some button on his lap top then it just put me in the back of my seat, best drive home ever!

No the S2's power delivery is not like that, the torque curve is smoother. Not as smooth as the new Audi's bi-turbo however.

The RS2 turbo however does deliver power in the manor your speaking.

no it's not chipped all it's got is a s/s scorpion system with de-cat pipes. so would you say it sounds like it's working as it should then. am looking at getting it chipped but need to make sure its running as it should before i do.

Top tip - fit a boost gauge... Then report performance... But yes the S2 has a smooth character in torque delivery in stock fashion. Chipped properly you will feel the extra oomf of higher boost levels when they kick in.

if you fit a boost controller you can have that kick. standard map wont provide it.

            the differecne is 3 things.

1 compression is higher on the S2. give less off all or nothing.
2 turbo is smaller. similar in size to a tdo4 off a post 96 impreza.
3 the extra pot helps give more power off boost.

less of a transition between on and off.

Mmmm - not convinced that a manual boost controller can provide a 'kick' on a turbo such as our wee K24 here... Its not like one of these monster turbos which is incapable of high boost levels until the high rev ranges.

On the RS2, the factory boost programming is terrible - obviously done deliberately to give it lots of lag and unresponsiveness down low in comparison to a Porker turbo. When it comes 'on' you get the 'kick'... But with a good chip upgrade on the RS2 you can greatly reduce the lag, bring boost on earlier - to higher levels as well and have a much smoother power delivery than factory.

The S2 turbo is a bit smaller than RS2 item so its hard to give it that 'kick' in software - unless you wish it drive poorly off boost...

As said before though - only a boost gauge will tell you what is going on... Even in factory trim your butt dyno should confirm that 1.1-1.2bar is reasonably swift - but thats on a healthy ABY... If you are used to quick cars then it wont bend your mind... A boost leak or some other defect could have you at much reduced boost levels and that really takes the edge off that feeling in the butt dyno.

A good ECU rework will get you to 1.4-1.5bar on the ABY with no other mechanical tweaks required - but only worthwhile investing in when the car is certified healthy and air-leak freee.

it worked on mine paul. with factory everything.

the kick was more as it spooled faster, a little too fast at times. and held slightly higer boost at 1.1 flat across the range. fueling was great. not night and day to the extent of the feel of a rex with a TD05. like a rex with a AFR, FCD and 1.2bar though.

it really is the all or nothing of 8:1 compression that makes the cossie and the rex feel faster. they make similar hp and torque. and the shorter gearing too.

mine has gona a little all or nothing now. its a fair bit faster than most scoobies and cossies though now. the small turbo of the cossie will win in the zippy stakes but when using more than one gear the bigger turbo and revs help loads.

paul may be able to help you with a chip. not sure. a worthy first mod.
