S2 Avant (MTM chip) vs Mitsu Evo VI ?

New years eve, driving back from my cousins in Plumstead (near the bus garage) along the "low road" back to Dartford about 5:30pm came accross a black Evo VI at a set of traffic lights, thought to myself, dont even bother!

well, he gave it full beans away from the lights on the amber, so waited split second for Green and i was away, stayed fairly closely behind him through a bit of town, untill we got onto the duel carrige way (about 5 streches of between 1/2 and 1 mile long sections, with duel lane round abouts between them, leading upto the big M25 roundabout at the Dartford Hilton, where the crossing is) was right behind him coming into the first roundabout, and we both planted it, i was very clearly faster then him, could creep up to his bumper and lift off etc. followed him through the 2nd and 3rd roundabout doing the same up the next 2 sections of duel carrige way, into the 4th or fifth i was right up with him, and he finally moved out of the outside lane and i passed him, with a bewildered look on his face!

got to the large M25 roundabout and i was stopped at the lights, he gingerly pulled along side, so i wound the window down.

he said "what the hell have you got in that"

    i just said its a 2.2 5 pot turbo

he said "well, its very fast"

his girlfriend didnt look to impressed...

he then went on his way towards essex and i jumped on the M25 back to Tonbridge

i think i drove all the way back with a big grin on my face.. like a cheshire cat...

im sure if we had a streight race off the lights, he would have definately got me atleast to 60 (im sure there 4.5 to 60) and the avant is shocking off the line!

(what is it about not making any boost untill its under load, is this to protect the 4x4 system) or have i got something mixed up? im sure imprezas and evo's etc dont need to be under load to get boost?

love it. I've had the odd hilariously confused look or question as most can't equate a 15 YO Audi as fast!

Manufacturer figures are a bit misleading, most people haven't got the balls to be that harsh on a car (and for good reason ). I've done it a couple of times and it's not a good idea. The good thing with the S2 is that you have low lag and plenty of torque through the revs, 3k to 6k, I've followed a Sunny GTI-R, me in 4th and him using every gear in the box, no faster than mine was stock. Same with many Scoobys, Evos, Elises etc. Had one Scooby that was doing silly things to get away, turned out to be a woman driving her daughter, a bit silly but if only there were more females like that Best ever was a Porsche 997 targa going to Sheffield, he booted it of the lights to show his missus what a proper car could do, I was off guard in second and by the time I got boost I sat about 30m behind him but he didn't pull away. He looked very confused when I drew alongside after he slowed.

No petrol turbo car makes boost off load AFAIK.
The exception is cars with launch control or similar.
If you want boost when lifting off the clutch, rev the car + apply the brakes and slowly lift the clutch = it is under load and you will have boost from stand still when you dump the clutch completely.

Don't do this maneuver excessively, I will not be held responsible to what happens with your clutch

yeah, the balancing act between boost, clutch and grip is a pig, still get it wrong after years of practice.

I used to be able to do this quite nicely till the clutch gave out

Yeah, it's a bit tricky to get the hang of it, but good fun when you get a perfect start with lots of torque blasting you away

                  It eats clutch though..
