    S2 avant buyers questions

    Hi everyone,

Currently drive a jap car but had various vag cars i nthe past (Golf VR6's, Ibiza Cupra etc) and fancy trying something old school hence an S2.

Ive found one for sale that i like with just under 100k omn the clock and wondered how the ABY engine stands up to mileage? Taking into account the cars got FSH and is chipped (Home Fries)

What sort of mileage would you expect to get out of an ABY before rings are going to be worn and it starts burning oil etc.

    Cheers for any help

Milage on these cars is not a problem, mine has 157k on the clock and it is sound. It is totally stock and pulls like a train. As for home fries. Can wait to get the few pennies for what it cost for the power gain you get. I've only heard good things about it. Ask anyone on here. These cars are the last of the proper Audis, if you ask me!
Just some finishing touches to do now

Sounds like a good one you're thinking of getting. As said before, high miles are not a problem as long as you look after it, so it should last you a long time. Mine is on just 119k yet needed a fair amount of work doing to it, and still does need a few more done. It'll be a committed relationship with an S2 but a very enjoyable one

What sort of work are we talking about that needed doing mate?

Are s2's reliable enough to use as a daily driver? What are common faults on them to be aware of?

                      As above?

Also whats general running costs like, ignore petrol i know they are crap on fuel lol

Whats a general service consist of? Is it the usual oil and filter or is there a lot more to change on an s2 such as diff oils etc?

The problem is the S2 is not unlike any other performance car it's hard to quantify a cost as the cost will be determined by the state of the vehicle when you've bought it.

If you buy a cheap one thinking your saving money it will end up costing you more sorting the problems.

Speak to Dest, he had to pay a lot to sort his car out but it was running sweet once sorted.

The key here is find one that has been looked after and if possible modified with things like Samco / Silicon hoses. Porsche Front brakes as that's half the battle won.

Whats a general service consist of? Is it the usual oil and filter or is there a lot more to change on an s2 such as diff oils etc?[/

An engine oil service consisting of oil and filter should be carried out every 5k miles, the gearbox and diff oil are designed to last for the life of the car, but it's not a bad idea to change both every 40K or so, at least check the levels of both when you first get a car.

Spark plugs are expensive (£50) but last for up to 20k miles.

Air filter every 10k miles, shouldn't cost more than £15.

Use decent coolant and change it every two or four years depending on what type you use.

The hydraulic fluid is a mineral type which should be green in colour, do not on any account use normal red PAS fluid to top up the system.

As Jamo states above the condition of the car when you take it on will have a large effect on how much it will cost you to run, buying a cheap S2 is usually a false economy unless you get very lucky.

My car is up for sale and has full Audi history bar the last service and I have added the samco boost hoses, porsche brakes and S8 discs, full milltek, RS2 interior.

It also has had a recent main radiator, power steering pump replaced with correct fluid.
