PC question on COM ports & USB grief

Ahh - here's a wrinkle... before I commit this registry hack... I have another device that sets up a virtual COM port via USB2 - its working beautifully on COM11 - which is presumably the 1st available port it found on my list... Will I need to reinstall that thing or should USB PnP just assign it a different COM port after the hack ?

I would leave it as as to avoid any trouble with reinstalling drivers or reassignment. To preserve port 11 change the first two bytes instead to 01 04. <edited to correct second byte value>

And this weeks 'top technician' award goes to Nuvo - what a fix mate - brilliant...

COM1 and COM11 preserved as per the theory (tested already) and all other COM ports freed up again.

Thanks a LOT for that hack - saved me a lot of grief and I'd never of got a fix looking in the usual places...

Interesting... my next Mac will be running Fusion - but I hear Parallels is very good too. Can you get other USB devices working thru Parallels OK ?

@Nuvo - can you work your regedit magic again on a different machine please ?

This one has some built in h/w that consumes COM2 but I want to free up all the COM ports again. Currently its saying that COM ports 1 and 3-9 are 'unavailable'.

It is a Win7 machine if it matters....

ComDB = FF 01 followed by 30 instances of '00'

Oh that was a wee while back. Let me see if I can remember how I did this.

I think you need to replace the bytes FF 01 with 02 00 in this instance.
