I'm pretty sure you can pick up a Merc ML270 CDi for around £5k-ish, a bit over budget perhaps. I'm pretty sure we didn't get any 4WD BMW's over here (apart from X3 & X5) after the E34 525iX and E36 325iX. Shame, cos they do make the newer ones too with 4WD, Switzerland has loads of them.
How about a Volvo V70 D5 AWD?

I take it that you haven't had the snow yet, no i have had a 4wd car for 9 years and i feel safer in it. I did find a X reg VW Passat 4motion 2.8 V6 in Inverness with 69K and black Leather for £3600, but i am relying on the money that i generate from breaking the S2 and the sale of the A3. I put a ad in scot-ads this week but they listed my mobile number with 2 extra digits at the beginning and now the car won't be listed until the 21st. With the weather the way it is just now and not having a garage to work in getting stuff done is proving a nightmare and to make matters worse the mechanic that was suppose to help me never turned up
I refuse to get a Volvo point blank on the basis that i am not ready to log on to pipeandslippers.com's forum. I looked at ML's and grand Cherokee jeeps already but they don't have very good fuel economy.
The Passat is an option but i am not sure if a 2.8 will give me a headache with my insurance. Suggestions anyone for insurance companies who don't penalise you for speeding if you have never had any accidents? (I know that i am in dream world)
