    Sand blasting equipment

What do I need if i'm going to sand blast some parts? I have use of a 25ltr compressor but don't know if this will do the job (I can probably get the use of a bigger one if need be). I've looked at sand blasting guns and they're around £20 but what sand/grit do you use and can you get away with out using a cabinet.

OR, does any body know of some where in the Chitchester area that could do sand blasting for me

    Cheers

My advice is leave it to the experts as its dirt cheap anyway.
I got all my rear suspension / subframe / hubs / diff hangers / prop guards / tank straps etc etc (about 28 parts in all) blasted and powder coated for £175.
Would have taken me weeks to do that - and they wouldn't have looked nearly as good! (they now look literally like they just came off the Audi parts desk!!)

got to agree, found a local grit blaster locally and checked they had done plenty of car parts before and left it to them. Dirst cheap, great results and a local powder coater painted them up, equally good job and for very decent money.

I'll 3rd that notion - don't waste your time... Take to a professional. They'll have something a bit beefier than a tiddlywink 25l compressor shall we say.

So as I already have a huge compressor and a sand blasting booth I picked up where can you get the media from ?

I'm not trying to blast subframes or wheels as there is a local company who do that and coat them for as you all say not much, I just want to do small items.

Any advice on what to use would be great, its mainly alloy if that makes much difference

You've got no chance with a 25ltr receiver, the compressor will be running all the time and it will not be able to keep up with the demand of a shot blast gun. I have one of these

It's powered by a 14cfm compressor with a 50ltr receiver and it just keeps up, but your pretty limited as to what you can get in it as it's pretty cramped inside.
You can buy blasting media from Ebay, or go to your local shotblaster and ask where they buy theirs from

If you going to do blasting outside the box, keep in mind, that serious respiratory protection is needed. Just because small silica particles (when inhaled) do permanent damage to your lungs. This is serious (and popular ) complication for rescue workers who spent just few hours in thick aggressive dust and have ruined their health forever. And hobby sandblasters sometimes fell into same category.

All good info guys I've spoken to a friend of mine who manages an agricultural contractors and they have a very large compressor I can use. I'm going to get a price for how much the work will cost if I get it done professionally before I start buying sand blasting gear
