simple question - the ultimate 80 was the RS2 Avant. The next "best" thing was the S2 Avant. So why is the coupe usually valued much, much higher? please no rants, i know the coupe is great but why £££ more ? Looking on the net today a nice Avant going for 2.5k and a decent Coupe for 4k?
dont want to ask this....

Desirability - Coupe is an absolute classic shape, personally, thats the main reason I got into Audis in the first place. Nowt against Avants, they're more than fit for purpose, but imagine if Audi produced and RS2 Coupe, what they'd be worth now.Comment

100% spot on. coupe is a CLASSIC shape with a sports look to match performance.
an RS2 coupe would be the top dog for sure. but thats why porsche never made an RS2 coupe ...they knew it would affect their own sports car sales. the fact that they even got involved in the avant shape tells its own story...they didn't see it as a threat.
nothing wrong with RS2/avants though, they do the job intended.Comment

It wasn't so long ago that Avants were worth more than the Coupe. The Coupe is being kept up in value because it is now in the price range of the chav.

I remember only a couple of years or so ago a tidy Avant was worth more than a tidy Coupe of similar age, miles, etc. About £1000 more? As stated with the Coupe never having been replaced whereas the S2 Avant was replaced by the later S4 Avant variants. However, the Coupe was always in the shadow of the original quattro which though older, was a more desirable model due to its rally history - then with the launch of Ashes to Ashes tv series, their popularity grew even more with prices jumping up overnight! I believe the S2 Coupe is benefitting from that as many of those who want a quattro may not be able to afford one, making the S2 Coupe a very desirable option. It has the sport car looks, great performance, it still has the quattro heritage yet is much cheaper - but where there starts to be demand for an item, it then puts more of a premium onto that item and as a result, the Coupe has risen slightly in value as of late.
The S2 Avant being a more family biased car has been hit hard recently, as those with families possibly can't afford to run them anymore, and those looking at a 15yr old estate car would more than likely be wanting something cheap to buy and run - something any S2 is not, cheap to run!! Perhaps now could be the best time to buy an Avant, their numbers are far fewer than the Coupes, so in time they could/should become a classic... I'm hoping they will atleast
thats just all my humble opinion

Simple really, coupes are what the car firms are making at the moment. Passat cc, scirocco, merc, bmw, all making coupes. Even the super car boys are making front engine GT cars. Its a fashion thing i reckon, coupled with a bit of supply and demand.Ragusa Coupe gone!
