After Oct 08 ALL testing stations had to have their emissions equipment database upodated otherwise they were not able to test.

There was a thread on Audifans about the non cat test for cars that can't be found on the list and i checked my test equipment in work and found all the S2 (3b,ABY) and the RS2 engines listed.

The only way around this is a friendly tester or one that cannot find the car on the list!!

With reference to above the car must be tested at operating temp(anything >60 deg C oil temp)
Fails on the CO are cat related (or none fitted!!)
Fails on the HC are usually ignition related (as in duff plugs!!)
Lambda fails are either a fooked sensor or a hole/blow in the system

This is a general idea of what causes the car to fail, any tester who knows what he's doing can give a better idea on individual cases. 9 times out of 10 poorly maintained cars are the ones that give emissions problems(or bimmers!!),and most enthusiast cars rarely do(or shouldn't!!!!)

And yes i am a tester who can remember the days before cats! and when you tuned cars with a screwdriver not a laptop!!!

Well there's one good thing about livin over here - just a basic emissions test required.

Yeah, high CO reading was what annoyed me, not sure why the HCs are high too, might be related. Will get it tested when I've had a chance to go through it all...

CO is controlled by the cat & lambda sensor- was your lambda reading out of range?
HC is unburnt HydroCarbons, as in unburnt fuel- first port of call is your plugs, how old is the oil?, air filter clean?, is the engine "breathing" excessively(as in worn rings), coolant temp sensors to the ecu can cause high HC and poor economy, due to the ecu thinking the car is colder than it is and overfuelling..

I have had cars that have been so far out on the test, that you would think that the engine is foooked, but then you find out that the car hasn't seen a service in years- one service later they fly through the fast pass test!!!!
            What readings did you have??

Maybe the emissions equipment was was on the blink? I've had that before. Emissions were miles out when it was on the test, but fine otherwise, retested about 4 times before it passed by miles. The car was just sat there idling smoothly the whole time.
It was the first year I had the computerised test. I wasn't impressed.

The S2 has been no problems the last couple of years.

Right, just had the car re-tested and talked through the test with teh guy who did it. The car passed a CAT test using standard MOT proceedure so all good

                Results were:-

                CO 0.27%
                HC 136ppm
Lambda 0.999 (Beru item is still going strong )

                Natural idle was:-

                CO 0.32%

So that's Eco-Warrior-Casey to you lot now !

So your sporty CAT is healthy then - putting this down to bad test/equipment the last time then ?

Didn't see the test being run last time, if it was tested as an A reg during a special moment by the tester then that explains it, otherwise not sure, could have been the wrong printout...

Either way, yes, all works so I'm now happy once again!

Paul, have you contacted Prospeed with regards to your modular system? They might be quite competitive on £££.

Out of interest do they determine engine code by the Reg / Vin or physically checking the engine?

I ask as my Avant is now sporting an ADU head.............
