    Is this normal??..

having started to look at changing hoses in my avant, I noticed the moisture on the 2 hoses in the pictures below.....

should I be worried??...and how should I fix it??....

these are probably 'normal and common' amongst the 5 pot but to me they look a little worrying...as if something was blocked....

    any ideas??.....thanks for any help...

    cheers

    Mike

It's an engine bay that's not been cleaned in XX years, a bit of oil is to be expected. Give everything a good check over, looks like the PCV and cam cover gasket are leakign a touch from the pics, keep an eye on it.

Looks to me like your crank case breather is in need of a clean and most likely replacing too.

I bet those hoses are split, so the moisture that your seeing there is actually oil vapor that's leaking and should be vented through the PCV system.

Catch tank would solve that. Have a search.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation - breather system basically. Might be a bit blocked and sweating, as Andy says its probably never been cleaned either.
IIRC some of those breather hoses are uber expensive / NLA so if you take it off to clean up etc, go easy

would a standard hose be ok or is it better to go silicone??...I am looking at ordering some hoses from roose for my suspected boost leak...

Mike: As others have suggested, that is not "moisture", it's oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system. While I do not have any specific ABY info, this AAN info should help you to figure out what the deal is:

You need a new PCV valve and clean the fire trap, car will go 100% better after it I was shocked after changing mine on my Coupe.

Yep - the goo that collects in there is dizgusting...

Get a new PCV valve and flame trap (looks like metal coily brushy thing).
Suggest you check all the PCV pipes too for cracks or splits before you order parts up - they are a stupid price from Audi... I have long talked about getting replacements made by Samco but never organised that (amongst other things).

Give the pipes a good check and flush if necessary - the lower section near the valve is always the gooiest... Catch/cyclone tank is your friend - don't vent it open near the bulkhead unless you really like the smell of hot oil.

is the PCV system under negative pressure only when the engine is running or is it permanently pressurised??....sorry for the numpty questions...

only when the engine is running - the PCV is drawn by the engine "breathing in" the vapour

Disagree. The AAN and I presume the ABY crankcase ventilation system is a two way street. One way, over to the turbo under idle and the other way under full/part throttle, as shown in the post I gave above and repeated here:

Surely if its plumbed in before the turbo its always under vacuum?
