In the picture above the clips I was referring to at the front are the one's above the handle for moving the seat forwards and backwards and below the base of the seat (they are 2x big metal rods with spring clips on the end to hold them in, you just need to take off 1 of the spring clips and remove the bar)

I will try and have a go at this over the next week or so as I have yet another spare set of these seats and some spare bases for them so will try get some pictures etc when I do it.

      Thanks for the update Acidburn.

      My update:
      - the subframes are now changed from B4 (manual height adjustment version) front seats to C4 S6 seats. The S6 front seats fit well to the B4. The tilting seat sub frame rail position switch for moving the seat back and forth needs to be taken from S6 subframe to the B4 subframe, because otherwise the tilting lock mechanism is not at a good position when the new seat has the adjustable leg support.

I strongly assume that same upgrade method works for installing the B5 S4 front seats to B4.

I wish the Audi designers would have done some more headroom for sun roof equipped cars......

          Hello, Fish,
the seats with had the ok subframes for me were from s2 coupe. Those tilt mechanisms are now obsolete for me. PM for me if interested in to the mechanisms for some R&D work..... Skandinavian Buspaket is quite cheap.

I have got a pair of manual seats from a Ur-S4 to replace those in my B4 saloon, I attempted the swapping of Ur-S4 subframes for The B4 ones and found 2 things that stopped me....

The passenger subframe from my B4 will not come off to go on the Ur-S4 item as the B4's subframe has no height adjustment. Which B4 models had height adjustment on the passenger seat?

I am struggling with the spot welded bar problem. How has this been overcome, or am I looking at the wrong part?

            Do it in pictures:

The green arrows point to the height adjustable subframe on the B4 seat and the area where it is welded.

This is the area where there's a spot weld, it is like this at the other end of the bar

If I took both clips out, it still doesn't go anywhere, how do you get through this weld? It is like it on the B4 seats and the Ur-S4 ones.

When I did mine we just knocked off some of the clips and moved the pins, no cutting/welding.

iirc its 20v/v6/s2 seats I can't remember what I got my bases from, late model cars might have them as well.

It is possible to make them tilt for use in a coupe mate :mischeif:

Mine are in my saloon now, I don't think you'll be able to make them tilt easily though! I used 10v 5cyl coupe subframes with height adjust on both passenger and driver sides (the other non height adjust type won't work) I found it easiest to cut the subframes off of both my seats and cut the front lugs off the coupe seats to remove the subframes as all had spot welds on. Then all that was required was manipulating the front of the subframe (including bar) in between the two lugs which had been splayed out, then bend them back using a g-clamp and grips!

Hmmm mine definately needed no welding to the subframes everything was just undo-swap-refit, and think thats the same with alex's.

I used a mini grinder to grind the spot welds off the pins, then tapped them out, then swapped the bases over and refitted the pins and clips - easy

The tilt conversion is a LOT of work and requires stripping the seat down to the bare frame, some grinding, cutting and welding from your old seat, but will be like OEM when its done. I'll do a how-to when I do my second seat, I'm swapping the heated elements from my old S2 seats too.

These urS4 ones are a massive improvement on the stock coupe ones, sooo much more comfy and look like the car rolled out the factory with them in

You should see the angle grinding pics I have of sorting mine!! They do look nice in the car, very standard looking, even though I have a black interior and grey UrS4 seats! I'm doing 200 miles a week in them and they are very nice, especially with my CG lock which helps support my weakling of a lower back. I'm 6'4" and noticed that these seats don't drop down as far as the old ones (my head grazes the rooflining unless I have a grade 2!) They also don't go as far back but this isn't a problem (the old ones go back too far for me to touch the pedals comfortably), and are now as far back as these'll go. It looks like there is less backseat room but how often do you sit in them?! I noticed that if the drivers seat is anything other than all the way back, it squeaks on the centre console. This can be remedied by putting it back all the way or removing the plastic side cover on the 'hinge' between the seat back and squab.

Teaser pics - the work on the first urS4 backrest is done. Heated elements installed and the handle, cable and catches installed to allow them to work properly in a coupe - works perfectly :mischeif:

I'll try and take some pics during the conversion of the second one - its not for the feint hearted!
