S6 C5 shape.

Hi guys,

Maybe returning to S-car ownership again soon. Thinking about an S6 avant V8 but could do with some background knowlage/advice.

1) Anyone know what the revs sit at 70 mph? Frequently drive an S4 V8 and really can't stand the 3k rpm at 70 mph whine, I'm hoping the S6 is geared for more relaxed cruising.

2) Apart from timing belt changes at 80k are there any other "big" maintenance costs to watch for when buying?

3) Can't find any for sale within 300 miles of Glasgow so a test drive is out of the question, can any previous owners give me a brief overview of what to expect?

I would have thought that they use the same gear box so would have thought that the ratio's are the same? Correct me if i'm wrong anyone. Other than that i know very little about them other than they sound GREAT!

S6 is tiptronic auto, S4 is manual 6 speed. Trying to find out if final drive ratio is the same or longer in the S6.

Can't answer your question, but just to rock the boat slightly - before you decide to go the S6 route consider the veritable D2 S8.

At 70mph, no whine whatsover just a gentle purr but floor it and you'll hear the wonderful V8 warble from the 4.2... :thumb:

Thanks Clive, unfortunately needs to be an avant so the german shepherd and collie have somewhere to sit.

Are S6's so rare that none of the Audi fans on here haven't been in one?

Ah OK. I haven't been in an S6, but if your budget can stretch to a C5 RS6, then I would make the same comments, except louder (and the S8 is even lighter than the RS6)
