    How unlucky

    copied over from passionford

3 weeks ago went out for a drive as i was off to le mans. Wanted to make sure the car was ok. Put my foot down in 4th and bang thought i had blown the gearbox but could select the gears. Glanced at oil pressure gauge, all ok. Pulled over to the hard shoulder, very loud knocking noise coming from the engine and only running on 3 cylinders! No smoke out the back. Popped the bonnet. Noise coming from the head so switched it off immediately. Called the AA (AGAIN ) and then called the Shead. Told me to bring car straight to him. This is a Sunday afternoon but that didn't seem to trouble Mark. He thought i had dropped a valve or a valve seat

Got to MAD HQ, and took the plugs out. Number 3 plug smashed closed and bent. Got the snap on bore camera out and mark started looking inside the engine. He can see what looks like a lump of metal embedded in the head near the inlet valves. Couldn't work out what it was and as i had to wait about 90 mins for my mate to come and get me we started to take the head off.

Well, what awaited us when we got the head off, defies belief really. There was a 10mm nut lodged in the head, it had completely ****ed number 3 piston and done major damage to the head. Lots of head scratching from Mark and myself as there is just no way a nut can get into an engine. Mark picked up my dump valve and examined it. 2 tiny little witness marks present which matched the size of a 10mm nut. So it looked like this ****ing nut had gone in through the dump valve when it was open (on idle) and somehow managed to get through the throttle body, past the valves and cause all this damage. Slim reckons i had more chance of winning the lottery than this sort of thing happening.

Was proper gutted and upset as le mans was 4 days away and i didn't have the money to fix it. The head looked scrap, the piston was scrap, plus all the other parts i would need to get it running again. By this time, my mate had turned up to collect me.

how unlucky is that to happen, still they got the car up and running for leman's only for the alternator to pack up when they got there

Yeah waiting for the pictures to be uploaded of the damage etc, that is seriously bad luck for it to make it all that way around the intake into the engine.
