    Coolent pipe explosion !!

Couple of days ago was sat in traffic when the temp warning light came on and then
pop, something had let go and i lost all the coolant ,got recoverd and had a gander .
Turned out to be the small rubber pipe from the water rail to turbo coolant pipe.
Replaced it with some h\duty pipe and all is well (cheers Martin),Ran the car upto
temp tonight to see if all ok ,the thing is the fan doesnt start till the needle is
2\3 notches past 90deg and thaen it only ran for about 5sec ,is this normal
I would like to control when the fan comes in if possible

It's not building pressure properly. When it's not sealed properly you get funny temperatures. When it's up to temp and pressure listen out for leaks, be careful tho, don't want a pipe exploding in your face like I had...

Mines the same when it comes to the fan kicking in. In normal driving, the needle stays on 90 but in traffic or in hot weather it rises a couple of notches before the fan comes in, and only then for a few seconds.

Strongly suggest that you replace your replace hose with proper Audi hose designated for that service. Invariably, a non-OE hose in that application will fail fairly soon and again, without warning.

          The audi hose is sh*t!

Speak to s2central and see if he has the samco replacement for this hose.

On my Coupe the OEM rubber was shagged really p*ss poor design to have such a little hose in a stupid place.

Alternatively have a custom hose made in SS from water rail to turbo ala the 034 kits for the Garretts.

My header tank cap was leaking a little, a new one has led to proper behaviour again... wonder what's next to replace...

@ Jamo - the oem hose is not p*ss poor, its 16yrs old... you try being heat cyled for that long and see if you don't fail too

Sure some advances in rubber technology over tat period but fresh stock rubber will perform as advertised just as well as anything else if new.

As for the OP, I would say check that the fan does kick in at the right points as from experience you do not want it to fail or suddenly get the voltage to it and it not want to kick in, it'll fry the harness and (as mine did) the fuse plate too!

Check for a good contact on the rad themo sensor at the base of the main radiator as these have a tendancy to crud up and then do not kick in as they should. Same with the water rail sensor.
