I cant watch anymore of it, one of the things I need to do before I die is to have a go of an S1, can anybody help me? I'm not terminally ill but you know hahaha! how do you get that dumpvalve noise cos its like a bird tweeting isnt it hahaha!

Brilliant video. I dont think it had been speeded up, as there are videos from the outside on youtube as well from that run and it gets through the gear just as fast. I bet its not geared to hit much more than 120/130mph?
As for getting the dumpvalve sound, you need to throw away the dumpvalve.Comment

We need one big massive sticky about that 'dump valve noise' or 'wastegate chatter' - the sound is actually something called 'turbo stall' - as the compressor blades struggle to cut thru the back pressure of compressed air when the throttle is momentarily shut during gear changes...
Simply disconnect the control hose going to your turbo bypass valve (and block the hole on manifold side) if you want to hear something like that on an S2 - then see how long your turbo holds up before it needs a rebuild... Those old rally monsters probably had a fresh turbo for each event.Paul Nugent

The oversteer on and off power is insane, even with the massive aerodynamic package! It clearly was the quattro system and the turbo/antilag setup that made this car fast.
It's a shame Group B got so ridiculously fast (and deadly) in the end... otherwise the later quattro cars like the S2's could have been fitted with an IL5 placed at the back in stead of the front if the development of cars would have been continued on that fast pace as they were at that stage of time.Comment

Curiously enough - I'm sure I read that Audi were developing a mid engined quattro monster for rallying just before the demise of Group B - I've seen reference to it somewhere. I think one prototype was at least partially built... Gonna annoy me now where I've seen this.Paul Nugent
