Been trying to find out exactly what happened here and there seem to be conflicting reports:

He either used a lighter to see the fuel level in the tanker,

Or, he failed to ground the tanker, so when his phone rang the static build up caused a spark and the rest is history.

But it was definitely a Shell garage in Brazil!

Checking the level of a freshly opened petrol tanker compartment using a fag lighter
I wonder if that was a misprint in his training manual !!!
He's lucky he didn't break his neck when he ended up on the concrete never mind the hotpants.

It has been shown on mythbusters or similar that setting fire to petrol vapour with a mobile is very very difficult. Even when they had the stoichiometric (sp) mixture almost perfect in a sealed booth they struggled to set it off with a phone.

I suspect he really was very very stupid...

It looks like he pulls something out of his pocket, moves it towards the top of the tanker which i presume is the fuel opening, and then tries to leg it - as it explodes.

Id go with he dropped the lighter and turned around to run in the second it took to drop and explode.

Having now ventured into the petroleum industry this crops up the health and safety stuff all the time.

The stance the petroleum companies take is "the research is on going so lets not take the chance with mobiles in potentially explosive environments"

My argument is this, where are the spark plugs/Ht leads etc of car located when its at the petrol pump with its engine running ? Yes bang in the middle of ex zone 1

I agree with myth busters and this looks like a lighter job. idiot.

                          cheers
