Adding 5% ethanol to regular unleaded, it's not 99 octane petrol
E5 (and E10) has been the standard in many US states for a number of years (and, like Colorado, decades).
The effective octane rating is probably even higher than 99 octane, as the octane test does not take the cooling effect into account. E85 is rated at approx 105 RON, but effective octane is close to 120.
E100 is rated at approx 130 octane, but effective octane, especially in DI engines is approx 180 octane.

Thats what Tesco do to get their 99Ron Super unleaded. I run mine on it all the time and it's fine, can't tell the difference between that and V Power.

Learn something new everyday, I find V Power keeps going off in the tank, i've switched to Tesco fuel recently
yep . tuned on tesco juice and some other brands dont run as good. its the cheapest too.
optimax had that issue too jamo as im sure you know. something to do with the additives made it volatile. needs to be newer rather than older fuel the shell stuff.
I've been experimenting with this E5 fuel for a while now, my nearest Maxol is a bit out of the way so been running a tank of E5, then a few tanks of normal juice, and then back to the E5. Overall i can confirm there is a noticeable difference every time i fill up with E5, especially in the midrange where it pulls stronger and smoother.
My dad did a similar test in his 993 and was raving about it, in his own words "its a different car".

its good stuff mark. i have used now for over a year. i fill up my tank with E5 plus a bottle of millers octane booster. does very nicely
your dad is spot on mark. different car.
The thing about petrol is that it is all the same and all different .
Let me explain that.
The petrol for all petrol brands all comes from nearest local refinery of witch there are about 8 in the UK from memory.
Lets say you live in the north of England or Scotland, all of your petrol will come from the Grangemouth or Teeside refineries as these are the nearest , so if you buy shell or tesco or BP or whatever it is all the same the only difference is the additives put in at the refinery for increasing octane / cleaning products etc. for a particular fuel.
Now Grangemouth is owned by BP but if you fill up with shell v power up north it was made by BP not shell , shell just put there additives in it at the refinery when the taker is filled to make the generic petrol into v power. The same goes on all over the UK .
The refineries are owned by various companies ,not sure who they all are now but not all names you would recognise like SHELL /BP / ESSO etc
All the refineries make petrol within the given standards for petrol in the UK so this is why I say they are all the same but at the same time they are all different because when you buy V power down south it will have been made by a different refinery to a standard then shell put there additives in to make it V power . As is the same for all other variants of petrol brands .
So you may find that some tesco 99 ron is great in a particular part of the country and not as good in an other and the same goes for V power or E5 or whatever
