    Could insurance be backdated?

well, not exactly back dated as such. basically I need to show I've been using a car for 6 months in britain before I take it with me to finland when I move. no problem with my RHD A4 but if I could get a LHD car and have the seller date the V5 for a couple of months ago I'm wondering of there's some way I could get a year's insurance on it with the start date back in May. I'm 99% sure it's not possible but thought i'd throw it out there in case anyone knows differently
    section 5.1 has the rules

    cheers

(still looking for a LHD car to buy or swap for my A4 by the way)

Yeah unless something goes pear shaped with the house sale (looks good though. neither party in a chain, mortgage pre-approved, sold in 11 days) we'll probably be away in October or November.
I actually think I would probably need an "inside man" to do a policy for a year but back date it. It's not like I want to claim on something that happened in the past but for that reason i'd suspect it to be bloody difficult.
Honestly, you'd think they had these rules in place to stop this sort of thing

I'd forget the insurance idea if all that does is allow you to import your RHD car... I think that is actually a bad idea anyway for a country that drives LHD... It would be different if you owned an LHD car in the UK - that would make for sense to move for me. This is tricky of course as your timeline doesn't work. Good luck whatever happens.

No, this would be to import a LHD car mate. I can take my RHD no problem as i've had it for nearly a year. But to take a LHD car and not get hit with 29% of the Finnish retail value (think 30,000 euros for a 2004 S4 with 80k miles) I need to show I was using the car for 6 months before moving there. I can "visit" while I look for work and that's not counted, up to 40 or 50 days I think it is. But I think when I start working then I've officially moved there. So I'd need a period of ownership and use from ideally May to November, when i'll probably arrive. I don't want to go and buy a LHD car and find I can't take it without being humped on import tax. Otherwise i' just get a german friend to find me something there and drive it over. (still a possibility I guess)

Hi, you will not be able to "back date" insurance... Same day or future only (otherwise we would all drive round uninsured - insuring after something happens for a date before the incident....

yeah, bit of wishful thinking really. What I really need is a relative in insurance that would tweak it for me or... a time machine to go back and tell myself i'd sell the house quickly so I should go and buy a LHD car.

... to the insurance tweak or the time machine? I still hold out hope for the latter.

Sounds dodgy to me, surely if caught out it would constitute fraud of some type. Good luck with the move though Noel.

An insurance certificate is a legal contract and therefore no one who values being able to bend down in safety when they drop the soap would 'tweak' it for you.

My advise would be to find the car, buy the car and store it with a friend for 6 months before you import it, claiming that during those 6 months you operated in both countries as it was in the transitional phase.

                      Cheers n

good point , surely this thread now contains all the relevant times/dates/locations which could be used to show "aforethought" in any future evidentiary trawl, might be worth closing/deleting IMHO

imagine that. i've just come back to my computer and some buggr's been posting silly questions about insurance. not me though. i'm an upstanding member of the cummunity.
PS - Si, yeah I was thinking along those lines but need to find out what the exact definition is regarding when I officially moved there

Surely the easiest option is to sell yours here and buy one there once you are moved?

easiest but financially not great mate. My car would sell for about 5 grand here just now. the equivalent in left hand drive is 20,000 euros. and that's just the cheapest one I found. even 1999 1.6 B5 A4s go for 6 grand and upwards.

Or I could buy in germany and pay 29% of the finnish retail value in import tax. would still seriously sting the wallet.
