Average Speed Cams - at night ?

Simple question if anyone has inside knowledge...

Do "average speed cameras" work at night.

My instinct is that as they use a pretty small video camera to send a pic of your car to a numberplate registration computer, they probably can't get a good pic and so can't read the number on a dark road. OR do the crafty bleepers use infra-red??

ANPR cameras use IR lighting and filters.

I have seen many a idiot speed through them. When you drive past them at night you can see the red light thing at the side of them.
Just some finishing touches to do now

Glad of this post, always good to "know your enemy"! I had noticed that most of the time that they have a floodlight lighting up the area in front of them and was thinking that if this light wasn't on that perhaps the cameras weren't switched on. I definitely won't chance it now! Out of interest does anyone know what the tolerance is on them? The old 10% +3 or does it vary across counties?

While I can see the point of them in roadworks I noticed that they have installed a permanent 50MPH average speed check on the junction M3/M25 which is a worrying precedent! Makes me wonder how long will it be until they are routinely put on all "good roads"...

            .

Set distance between entering the 'box' and leaving the 'box', computer doing the distance/time maths, prolly 1%...quite easy.

They still will give you +10% because of your speedo accuracy though.

A M8 of mine has bought that book about how to avoid being done by the rossers as he is a long distance HGV driver, and I borrowed it...

And the section that covers this issues states that "the speed limit for fixed or mobile camera's is set by the local force, and if they want to they CAN inforce it with zero tolerance"... so if its 50 and you do 51 and get caught... It's tough luck...

I do think that on the Mways they do seem to allow you the 10%....

I asked cos I saw a few of the permanent ones somewhere near Peterborough a month or two back ... Damn those fiendishly ingenious people... anyway in a few years I reckon all cars will have trackers fitted and any time you go over the limit they'll just bang out an auto fine. Or electronically lock the car ignition from a control centre in space! (actually maybe I should start designing that system to sell to the cops!)

That's when the technies on this forum will start building by-pass systems ! please.....

Anyone noticed how cars travel closer together on average speed sections? Really safe....

Yes, and never, EVER move to the left after overtaking. They just sit in the same lane, doing the same speed, which holds everyone else up and causes congestion.

Often wondered about this. I happen to know my speedo is out at 30mph the wrong way and accurate at 70mph. Not too bad for a 23year old car, but if some poor sod has no idea and thinks he is doing 30mph as he passes a camera and the turkeys inside decide they need a few extra to meet their target and send a fine out for doing 31mph (it happens a lot in North Wales) where do you stand, is it worth contesting in court. If they are going to start working to this accuracy they should start introducing a test on speedo accuracy into the MOT to make it fair...

Well in Bristol a couple of years ago when they introduced the "speed safety partnership" (ie roadside laser speed guns in vans) the local rag created "the 41 club" - people who were convicted for doing 41 mph in a 40.

                          I know Norfolk operates a 10% + 2mph system. Don't ask me how I know...

Did anyone ever contest this and win? Seems they expect people to just fork out no matter how barmy or unjust. They are getting almost as bad as the rip off clampers you hear about . Guess this is what happens when you give out speeding targets to private partnerships. Another ill conceived no-brainer from our low IQ politicians...

No tolerance is utterly ridiculous, and I seem to remember Two Jags advocating it at some point in the past (which kind of sums it up really, coming from the man who struggled to string a sentence together...)
