    I know! 1400 miles though, it's mad.

Yes Chris it may seemingly make sense in the short term ....but when that car comes up for sale a few years down the line, that the next potential purchaser will know, as you and I know, that it was already 4k cheaper than it should have been, and that will be reflected in the used value. I certainly wouldn't be offering the value that would otherwise be placed on it.

The shocking thing was to see people trading in perfectly sound, solid, early Mercedes and driving away "proudly" (?!!) in a new Kia or whatever they are called now. That's just plain madness.

This scheme is just TOTAL BULLUKS!!!

I have a friend who is the Area MD of one of Yorkshires biggest Ford & Toyota dealerships...

And after talking to him over a few beers.. the conclusion was that for him as a dealer it's great as it moves old stock.... & they have now stopped offering the massive discounts on old stock items.....

Which all of the car manufactures have been guilty of stock pilling... 10's of thousands..

As I remeber it The Goverment & Manufacturere put's in £750.00ea and the Stealers put in £500.00 BUT the car HAS to be scrapped, or they get nothing....

THE PROBLEM is that Car's that NEED to be scrapped are owned by people who CAN'T afford to buy a new car....

Cars Thart ARE being scrapped are owned by peeps who have the money to maintain their 10 yaer old cars to such a standard that they don't need scrapping....

This then has a knock on effect to young drivers like my son.... we had been looking for a GOOD low mileage, tidy car with low insurance and it took us 2 months to find something...

But the number of wrecks that should be scrapped and are now fetching GOOD money is beyond a joke!!!!

      The whole scheme sucks.....

Plus if you want a proper discount my mate say you can save over £7000.00 on a 3 month old pre reg NEW MONDEO.........

      £2000.00 Who Care's.....

      WTF

I have been told by an insider that Ford are absolutely guilty of bumping their prices up just prior to the scheme starting, thus negating any so-called reduction that they offer.

TBH - IMO thats Bullocks too....

The price increase was due to the collaspe in value of the Pound against the Euro... (& Every other Major Currency in the world!!!)

18 months ago you were getting 1.40 euro for a quid...

In Jan this year it was just under 1-1... My Vodka & Coke in Portugal @ Jan 5th 2009 was £8.50 a shot, in the hotel... so we found a offie....

That hurt's!!! I Know as its affected my business too....

Whether or not that is true, the fact is you may get a £2000 discount for scrapping your old car, but it will be £2000 off the absolute top retail price for the car. If you were paying for a brand new car upfront you would probably be able to negociate a big discount on the car anyway making it just as cheap (as long as it wasnt a £4k Daewoo or something). As shown by the example of £7000 off a pre reg Mondeo in the previous post, the dealers can afford to make big discounts on their prices.

So you may be better off haggling with the dealer and selling your car (or turning it into a track monster )

I'm quoting from someone in the industry, whether you choose to believe it or not is up to you.

Slightly OT, but the americans have a far superior system of new car pricing. Its completely open with free/cheap access to the prices that dealers have to pay to get the cars in plus every option itemised as well. That way you know exactly if/when you are getting a good deal or not... Of course when some particular car is really hot, then all dealers prices drift high with demand, but its a nice way of keeping the dealers honest - versus the veils of secrecy on UK showroom prices.

The scrappage scheme helps the dealers shift more cars but you can bet they are still making tidy money off these supposedly discounted prices.
