    laser speed detection trap question

Ok, so I'm a bit worried
Assume the following FABRICATED scenarion :mischeif: : A 'Traffic Enforcement' car sitting in a layby on the side of the dual carriageway tonight (ver dark) - I saw it at about 500m distance when I slowed from 'too fast' to 'not too fast'.
What distance will the laser detection work at? Was I ok if I had been under speed limit at 400 metres?
I want to sleep tonight, so reassurance that everything will be ok is appreciated

the laser can pick you up at well over 1km but AFAIK now they have to get your average speed over a certain distance?

Unfortunately I know from personal experience they can get you more or less instantly from at least a 1000 yards

Good news is they usually have to pull you over to process it, assuming you're talking about the hand held Pro-Laser that the ordinary traffic cops use and not the "safety camera van" which video's your car?

The laser (lastec LTI 20/20) can get you speed in about 2 tenths of a second

Having said this they don't use them in the dark as far as I recall as they can't prove who the driver is from the video at night as you can't see into the car in the dark

so if you have 2 or more people on your insurance and you can't remeber :mischeif: which one of you was driving at the time they have to prove who it was :mischeif:

They do use the 20-20 in the dark, I know that also from personal experience Although you're right, they couldn't identify me. Didn't help me much as I was the only one insured and as the owner of the car you're liable to identify who was driving or you get the points anyway. The "I can't remember who was driving" trick is obsolete now. They always find a way to get somebody in the end!

If it was just an ordiniary traffic cop in a Range Rover or something (with a handheld Laser) then I think they probably got you but let you off, perhaps because you slowed down. I'm almost entirely sure those guys have to pull you over to give you a roadside NIP. It's only speedcameras and mobile camera vans that don't, because obviously they take a picture or video as well as a speed indication. Hand held lasers used by normal traffic cops only give a speed indication, so the cop has to pull you and caution you there and then at the roadside thereby acting as a scene witness in place of video evidence.

          Does that make sense?

But either way, it doesn't matter. I have been caught by both handheld and 20-20 in the past and both times it was from a distance of 1000+ yards, sorry to say

Are you talking traffic enforcement as in VOSA, usually a ford galaxy or similar ?

These guys have unbelievable powers but mainly use them on waggon's.

As far as I know, and don't quote me on this they do not usually deal in the business of speeding.

            Look at this

                Thanks everybody.
Well, I think you've reassured me - I didn't see any VOSA markings on the vehicle but it did say TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT in big letters down the side and it was an MPV of some sort (Galaxy or similar).
So I'm hoping it was a womble and not the fuzz.........

If you haven't been pulled over and dealth with at the roadside, and assuming it's not a company car or registered at a different address or anything, you'll know within the next 2 weeks either way.

I've got a radar speed cam detector which also has built in laser detection. Trouble is it only gets triggered when the guys with the laser speed guns switch it on and point at you... by which time ( well under a second) they will have logged your speed before you can even thuink to slow down. It's meant to work if you are in stream of traffic and the laser is pointed at a car ahead and bounces around and gets picked up by your detector.

Best thing of all with radar detector is it lets you know when you're aproaching a branch of New Look or Boots (with teh auto electric doors) Zzzzzzzz
