Don't forget to measure on a flat surface road, otherwise an extra factor has to be added

I was involved in the development of the Powerlog datalogger. http://www.powerlog.nl/projects.html#003

The device was originally used to determine maximum horsepower in a Dutch raceclass.
I did some basic tests to find the faults and accuracy of the logger.
In theory it's very simple, use an ordinary 3-axis G-shift sensor and a Gyroscope to monitor movement, and a GPS signal coming from a PDA for logging speed.

In the end it came out that the software was the limiting factor. You need to be very accurate with your signals in therms of processing (for instance when the GPS signal was dodgy it calculated it's own speed by the previous acceleration).
The actual results weren't representative and the development is still in progress. Stuff like realtime curbweight of the car (it monitors injector dutycycle to guess fuel use) and traction control (is it the max. acceleration possible) have to be implemented in order to get 'accurate' results.
