Most seem to be up around 280-300bhp fairly easy.
What about 400, 500?
Is it worth spending the cash or just wait until one comes along already modded?
id disagree. 95% of the fun for me is modding and choosing what you want in there. you dont get the nervy anticipation when you turn the key for the first time if its not the first time. lol when i got my s2 i already had a set of bbs split rims and a wagner tubular and sc61 sat there smiling at me. well the rims were not too happy that my dad left them outside behind the garden wall as "they aint goin in my ouse" was what in was told.
if you are not into doing the work then jamo has a good point. however there are a lot of lemons out there so be careful.
If you buy an S2, in any state of tune, you need to either be mechanically competent or fairly well off. Preferably both.
Gazza and Jamo both make good points. It's probably cheaper to look for a car that's already been converted to the sort of spec you want. However if you have the tools and are capable of doing the majority of work yourself it can be very rewarding plus you can do things exactly how you want.
1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.
1992 C4 2.8 Avant quattro
1994 MTM RS2.
1998 B5 TDI quattro Sport.
2000 B5 TQS.
There are two sides to the arguments, I bought a modded car that turned out not to be what was advertised in my opinion and then went on an even crazier modding spree but only because I managed to get help from the forum and friends.
My point is if you buy a stock car and then have to pay a tuner to do the work it is a minefield to find the correct person to do it as there are a lot of sharks and cowboys out there.
It 's depend on if your planning on doing the work yourself?
I'm no mechanic, But I've played around with plenty of cars since passing my test.
I'm fairly confident I can do most of the work myself, Only thing I'll leave to a pro is engine internals. Everything else is easy.
To tune these cars effectively you need to install new rods especially for your 400-500 bhp which is engine out and apart.
If your not doing it yourself as you say it has to go to a decent tuner / garage which is going to cost around 4-5k with someone trusted like Aelred for example.
Ontop of that add the parts of your choice.
This is why I would say look around, for instance there is a 400bhp RS2 which has everything done that is needed even down to braided hoses all round to it for sale in the classifieds.
Price that car up in comparison to buying a car and then buying bits plus labour it's more cost effective to buy that car for example.
You've then got a base to go even further if required
Where in Devon are you? There is a couple of heavily modifed s2s in devon, may be worth having a lock at one before you decide what you want. None of them are running properly atm though
Get one that's about 300 on an S2 turbo or 360+ on an RS2 turbo and enjoy it first, then if you still want more then go mad on it. No point buying a car, not driving it, spending loads of money on parts and then running out of cash or motivation and thus losing £££s and getting nothing for your trouble, seen it quite a few times on here, a shame as these cars are plenty good as stock and take some getting used to before you can extract the best from teh chassis.
A few RS2'd coupes about at the mo for about £500 more than a stock one, that's where my money would go, or the 3071'd RS2

That makes sense, Never been in one
I'm only really looking at an Avant as I have a large dog. I've an old T5 Estate I'm using for him at the minute, Just haven't had any "toys" for a while so was looking for a compromise between the two.
No point sticking 500bhp into something that you haven't driven much or learned how to drive properly, it'll show up any weakensses in your driving pretty fast
Avants are tamer than Coupes in the handling stakes due to impreved rear suspension, both can be made quite effective but you have to learn to drive a quattro due to weight distribution and the sheer grip, will make you laugh at the T5's FWD.
Steve (above) was selling his RS2'd coupe for a good price
