New TDi ..what do you think??

The wife's 15 yr old Golf TDi needs replacing ... I'm steering clear of peugots and renaults etc ..

AIMS
Budget £10k (would prefer to spend £8k)
AUTO box cos of all the town driving
TDi for economy

WANTED to stay VW, but ...

2007 Leon, 2L tdi 40k miles - 140 bhp, 47mpg
2007 Golf, 2L tdi 40k miles - 115 bhp or 140 bhp 47mpg
2007 Merc A class 2 tdi - 82bhp 50mpg

OR A LITTLE BABY...
2008 Colt, 1.5L tdi 20k miles - 95bhp 60mpg


The old Golf is 1.9L , 90bhp and 45mpg

We're not after power, so more interested in your experiences of reliability, equipment etc... any thoughts please... I'd just gof or another Golf, but the Leon looks good spec...then I spotted the Merc and thought mmm a Merc for the same price... and then the Mitsubishi (tho' smaller) would be really cheap..

I would use some caution. There seems to be a problem with some of the vag 2.0 tdi engines in regard to the oil pump drive and it failing. If you ask gazjen on here he had personal experience of this. Ben at AV performance would be the best person to talk to. I am a big fan of the audi diesels and my current a4 1.9 tdi is at 200k, my 80 tdi did nearly 270k, but I would now have severe concerns about buying a 2.0tdi.

how about a Skoda Fabia? My dad had one (the RS TDI, 130horses standard, chipped to 165...), and loves it. great little car, well built, drives well, very economical
