Audi Coupe Quattro (any good for rally?)

Hi guys, I thought it best to ask you since this is the best place i've visited for Audi info!

I'm thinking about entering a couple of rallys that happen near where I live (woodpecker and eagle rallys), i'm trying to choose a car, I don't want it to be super competative but I still want to make the right choice.

The audi that i'm looking at is a 1990 2.2 audi coupe http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1990-AUDI-QUAT...item35a59e719f

Now what i'm wondering is this, does that car have the same drive train as the S2 since the biggest problem i've read about with rally cars is transmission failure and I know the S2 drive-train is about as tough as it comes.

If it is a good choice, how much are we talking for some half decent forest spec suspension and a brake upgrade?

Where can I get these items + 6 point roll cage (or better)?

Any ideas what I can do to get the best out of this engine, it's a heavy car (even when stripped out) so I would like 200 ft/lb out of it and it has to be N/A due to MSA rules, 2.5 high compression stroker, cams?

Re brake upgrade, is it possible to convert to 5 stud since that gives more options, I would like to run the 15x8 ET24 quattro wheels ideally?

You need the 4 corners S2 hubs, front driveshafts, and the struts if I'm not wrong. Many ppl on the forum did that job, the info is easy to find on lots of threads. There's someone on the forum rallying with a Coupe turbo already but I don't remember who is it right now.... In Sweden someone who specializes on engine tuning, I saw last night they have a 2.5 20v producing 300+ bhp on the N/A! So think is good for you

Which brakes can I swap on which will fit under 15" wheels?

I wonder if I would be allowed to fit an S2 engine, since MSA says that any engine designated for that make/model, the s2 and coupe are both Type 8B right?

That way I could enter a few events with it near standard and if I don't like it or I manage to crash it/break it, there's no big loss and I haven't wreaked an S2... that all depends if the coupe has the same drive train as the s2 though

Hello and welcome. Theres loads of info and advice on this forum for all your technical queries!!!

I think the Coupe Quattro would be a good entry level car for rallying with its 4 wheel drive system and cheap replacement parts.

To convert an S2 engine would be great for massive bhp gains, but can be costly as the price of an engine can range from £500 - £1000 for an ABY with around 250bhp. there is a cheaper alternative with less BHP gains than the ABY like the 2.1 turbo from the UR Quattro and 100's with approx 200 bhp. Correct me if i'm wrong!!

Not sure what brake conversion would be best to fit under 15" wheels, but someone should be along soon.

i'm selling my 2.3 10v quattro with S2 hubs and brakes that i think would be a great project for turning into a rally car. See - http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41654.

          Hope this helps

          Chris

Coupe transmission is far from tough, You need a 01e tranny to fulfill that designation.

Although the transmission is pretty darn rigid, it still would not hold rallying for long with original clutch, so You need lightweight clutchdisc setup, preferably one of the 7.25in solutions. It is the syncros / forks / selective that fail, not the gears.
Everything less than 2 bar is considered to be naturally aspirated

Coupe is a good car, but for rally, id recommend 80 b2 quattro, because its light, strong, and fits all the same engines like in a coupe. good suspension (maybe coilovers, but bilsteins or smth is cheaper to replace), a bit bigger brakes and good engine. for engine id recommend 6a, 4pot, 16valve. its a good engine, its the same as the vw golf gti engine.
but the trick is that 6a engine cams allow it to produce only 136bhp, but fitting golf gtis kr engine cams, allows to produce 170bhp so thats a good point to start id think.
                but thats only my opinion.

The S2 brakes, that can be found on the 20V and V6 models too, 280mm, twin piston floating caliper and 4x108 and yes... those will fit the 15" wheels perfectly. Try to put a superior quality brake fluid and some ds2500 pads to have a better braking power.

As far as for the engine... remember the S2's is turbocharged, so if you say the rules say "no turbocharging", I think you cannot qualify...! For the high output n/a engines, there is the 7A (20V 2309cc, 170bhp) and the NM (20V 1994cc, 160bhp)... that basically are the same engines, just the: cam timing, bore and stroke changes.

Yes, all the S2 and the Coupes are Typ89, and the drive train from the quattros is the same as the S2 except for the things I wrote before to make the hub swap. Check out the typ89 that 4wheeldrifting is selling...seems to be a good choice, and the hub job is already done!

                  Cheers,

                  Fabio.

                    I would like a 80 b2 quattro but I can't find any :/

So to get the quattro in my original post on the right track I need:

7a engine (how much should I expect to pay?)
01e gearbox (how much are they worth and will this bolt straight onto the 7a?)
uprated clutch (could anyone recommend me one?)
conversion to 5x112 to fit quattro wheels (S2 hubs, front driveshafts, and the struts)
                    Audi quattro 8x15" ET24 wheels
Uprated discs, fluid and braided lines
Forest spec suspension setup (any recommendations?)
                    Polybush kit (any recommendations?)
                    Roll cage (any recommendations?)

hmmm.... i'm waiting to hear from a guy selling a prep'd mk2 astra 16v gte as well

If I decide on a quattro i'll definitely take you up on that offer

EDIT: Hang on, if that's a 20v (in my original post) shouldn't that already be a 2.3 20v 7a or is it?!

Mmmm... the coupe on your original post... I'm afraid it's not a 20V. You see... the early Coupes with the 2226cc were non catalyzed (at least not in Italy and germany), with 133bhp... 10V ohc and the mechanical K-Jetronic injection system! I'm not sure about THAT coupe, contact the seller and make him send you a pic from the engine bay to ensure it's a 10 or 20V. The 01E tranny (5 or 6spd) is a str8 bolt onto the 7A, but the 6speed one is a bit longer, so you should shorten and rebalance the driveshaft, and you may buy the gearbox supports from the ABY S2 with the same gearbox.
The cost of a 7A?? hmm...it may varies a lot... maybe JAMO knows something, he can give you good info!

                        Fabio.

PS: @JAMO! Hey mate, I was talking a long time ago with Peter Nanassy, and he told me that the Typ85 quattro driveshaft will fit perfectly on the Typ89 with the 01E 6spd! What do you know about it???

Get a 90q, they're stiffer than the coupe, I can hear the shell on mine creaking a bit when driving about, they need a proper cage welding in to get the shell nice and stiff really.

saloon shell is the way to go for proper motorsport.

As per the track car thread, B4q saloon has the best compromise of chassis (un)stiffness, suspension and weight IMHO

7A engines can be had for £100 or less if you know who to ask
