Getting 500+nm of torque from standard rods is not a problem , its if you knocking at these high torque levels that will banana your rods as this is what puts the massive load on the rods.
The standard/ home fried aby will stand moderate knocking and the ecu will just retard the ignition ,the extra stress on the rods is not enough to bend them. When you take them closer to what they can stand with the RS2 turbo the tune needs to be right and done so that there is no knocking what so ever , this is how minhea does it and has done many RS2 set-up aby's with high power and none of them have bent the rods . RS2 set-up is fine and well safe on standard rods with high torque , just get it mapped properly.
I remember someone who had a k26 on a 20v and jammed the wast gate shut accidentally and he made bananas
of his rods and that motor wouldn't have made as much torque as a standard RS2 set-up, it just knocked it's head off and the stress bent the rods .

Realistic options are RS2 K24 7200, CT350 or 2871 for that kind of power. All would see around 370+ bhp with the correct additions and could run on stock rods with correct mapping, although you might want to play it safe or have more torque so replace the rods.

AFAIK absolute requirements are turbo, rods, exhaust manifold and mapping.

Other things you should really have or could have are a larger intercooler, drilled or larger airbox or alternative, 2.75" or 3" downpipe and exhaust, the larger the better, clutch, samcos, uprated brakes, suspension and if you're going for more kit perhaps the wagner reverse inlet manifold - and the list goes on!

If it was me, i'd follow what s2central found out with the setup he mapped for des (iirc)

          2871r turbo
          rs2 exhaust manifold
          some uprated injectors
          full 3 inch system
          uprated clutch
bigger ic - even same as what bo originally had would be fine
          one of pauls chips

430ish bhp stock internals, low lag and still good results.

at least the myth that CT thrust bearing turbos are spooling faster than the garrett ones is busted IMO. The 3BB ones are ok. Member Jade had to change to a 3bb because the CT458 was too slow, and Bram got the 3bb from start instead of the thrust one on the CT355, which appears to be just as good as a GT3076 from what he says. That is understandable since the 355 has 55mm compressor inducer and the 3076 has 56mm. they are comparable.

The wagner IC will get all the cold air you need and the rs2 airbox should do the job.If you go the garrett route make sure you get the 0.82ar which will allow you better cruising EGTs and easier post 410+hp after the map.

              I agree with this,

Its over kill if your only running low power. i.e. 400. In a way im a bit miffed that i spent the best part of £2k on my inlet system alown. Not including the turbo etc.

But it is future prof and i have a feeling ill get bored with rs2 power sooner or later.
Atleast now all i need to change is the turbo, everything else can handle the best part of 600.

Just do it.... The s2 is good as fast as i thought id ever need then well one thing leads to another and apart from the price of fuel its awesome..

is there a standard chip that will work with the Garret 2871?

You could probably get one from 034, think paul's been working on one for a while but not 100% sure.

                      Current spec:
                      Roose boost hoses/silicon vacuum hoses
Cat back Milltek (has gutted cats)

I understand to get the most out of it, it would need rods, so all bits related to a rebuild too (gaskets/bolts/etc).

I beleive the basics to be:
                      Exhaust manifold (Wagner?)
                      Reverse inlet, intercooler+pipework
                      Injectors
                      Turbo (GT3071r?)
                      Clutch?

Obviously new management and a remap...

Hmmm, it does all add up once you include all the related bits for rebuilding after the rods are fitted, and whatever other hidden costs there are once you find the bits that need replacing along the way; would it be cheaper to sell the S2 as it is and buy an RS2?!

                      Alternatives/options/ideas welcome please
                      Hi Dest.

The sort of power level you are after has been done loads of times, no need for rods or reverse intake.
For an idea of costs for the RS2 conversion see this thread.

it needs a bigger turbo and the fueling to match with and exhaust on an aby. thats about it.

                        rods are a good sleep-easy.

My tuppence worth on this one is to agree with the sentiment that RS2 (K24 7200) Garret 2871/3071 or CT350 will all be up for the required target. Bigger fuelling of course to match the need. A target of ~400bhp needs something like 440cc injectors (Bosch / Ford Racing Greens - NOT RS2 injectors). I did do something for Des with 2871 and 650cc injectors but it was a but of an oddball though runs like mad and likes to destory MAF wires - nature of the beast at 400bhp... I really want to find time this year to get into hot film conversions to remove the pesky MAF without having to go to extreme expense of aftermarket ECU that works without MAF.

Rods are good for 500-550Nm IMHO.

The main advantage of the reverse IM in my opinion (and from what I've seen users report on) is nothing to do with increased power, but reduced lag - by way of less pressure drop between turbo and throttle body - guesstimating a saving approaching 2m in pipework compared to factory setup... The reverse IM gives better throttle response for improved driveability... But an ordinary IM will make same ultimate power on the same engine.
