    Looking at new car

No, not to replace the S2

I've got a 2003 Renault Clio 1.2 16v which is a brilliant little run around and cheap, but i want something better built, more comfortable, more powerful, still economic, reliable and reasonable to run, looking to spend up to ~8k.

I've always wanted a BMW 330ci or similar, but given my location i'm now thinking 4WD would suit me rather well.

Given this, the only thing i can come up with is an A4 quattro 1.9 TDI - a comfortable modern cruiser than can be used to commute, diesel so economic to run with a bit of poke and quattro.

    Any other ideas?

330 isn't so good on fuel, a mate has one and it's fractionally better than the S2.

        What about a Fiat Panda, they're 4wd

There are GOlf TDI 4 motions / A3 quattro, not quite the same but still 4wd when required.

Nowt wrong with BMW in teh snow, just need to keep your right foot off the loud pedal.

            A panda would be funny!

Not so keen on the A3's, and an early S3 isn't so cheap to run. A golf is a good option, would prefer the bigger A4 though i think.

Im not thinking quattro just because of the snow, but even the slightest bit of ice makes getting up my road challenging as its narrow, steep and twisty.

a4 1.9 tdi quattro, that would get my vote, my a4 would have been kept if the engine I had in mine (1.8 20v) was actually decent

                      1.2 60 HP
Pretty nippy for a 3 cylinder, build quality superb.
Looking to keep for 12 years at least.
Nice to drive a car home from dealers with just 9 miles on clock, that's a first.

Should be a nice shock to bring the RS2 out of winter hibernation April time:mischeif:

Volvo S/V70 AWD - though these seem to be the R version only.

                        Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 AWD - fuel guzzler maybe?

Audi A6 diesel with quattro - 2003 Final Edition or 2004 models.

Audi A4 diesel with quattro - 2003/4 models

                        VW Bora or Passat 4Motion.

                        Subaru Legacy GT-B twin-turbo (import) or 3.0 V6 - between 99 & 04.

Mitsubishi Galant VR4 - getting on abit though now

Freelander TD4 - not built as good as an Audi, but later models got better. 2006 models are in budget.

All the above are under £8k and 4wheel drive, all bigger than an A3 and some should be economical too.

A3 1.9TDI quattro, we nearly bought one to complete the set.
But if you really don't like A3s then an A4 1.9TDI quattro. Don't be tempted by the 2.5 V6 diesel or an Allroad.

Or convert an 80 TDI to quattro, that's what I would like to do
