TT 225 running costs / known problems?

My Mum is looking at a TT 225 quattro, it's a 2002 with 36k on it. She's selling her 2002 Golf GT TDI 150 so obviously fuel consumption will be a tad worse. Are there any known issues with earlier TT 225s, haldex, electrics etc.?

The wifes sister has a 51 plate one, bought it with 31 k on it and cambelt snapped at 38k, not too impressed with that, xenons packed up too, but I really do like it but economy is a bit iffy

Phew, it's for your mum. Didn't think you were a 'stylist'. My folks had one of the very first ones that got recalled to have the rear spoiler fitted that prevents lift off over-steer at high speeds. AFAIK the only problem they had in 40K's worth of use was the instrument cluster going spastic, was sorted under warranty.

Check out problems with Audi TT's on watchdog. You can find it on youtube.

The early ones had faulty clocks (dashpods) and would often cost the owners £800 to £1000 to fix.

I agree the early ones are lovely to drive, I got to have a couple of goes in the one my folks had for a week as demo car. Not driven one of the latter ones so I can't comment. Coil packs were also a problem but I think that applies to the whole 1.8T range of engines.

The only thing that would put me off having one would be everyone making the assumption that I'm, A, an estate agent. B, a hairdresser. C, just a prick in general.

Women driving them is fine though.

The handling issues can easily be sorted on the later TTs. Modified front wishbones and a bigger RARB will bring back the oversteer and feel of the old cars.

We've ran two MY2000 1.8Ts for a total of >10 years and ~140k miles and never had a coil pack issue. One had the usual water pump trouble. MAFs, G62s, thermostats and ABS sensors have cropped up on both.

Check out Waks Wide Web and the TT Forum for more useful info.

1.8T is bombproof motor, if taken care right. This is very first time for me to ever heard a timing belt to snap in these.

Also TT225 6-spd driveline is stout, only the haldex pump in the rear fails in all of these, eventually. Also the haldex itself wears out some day. Pump repair is easy job, but the part is ****ing expensive.

Some pre-2000 models have issues with drivability, if chipped/otherwise tuned, as they lack wideband lambda. 2001 and newer are pretty good in that point of view.

TT's biggest issue is it's weight. A TT roadster is almost as heavy as an S2, believe it or not.

The Haldex needs servicing every 20k miles, which seems to be often overlooked.

Yep. No EGT or WB lambda on a pre-2001, that's why our S3 isn't chipped, yet. ZT-2 is still in the box.

Any ETA on the Haldex failure Repo? Mine has done >240k km so far running ~330Nm.

Oilpump issue comes in if You have engine that's been running on mineral oil, and suddenly put in synthetic stuff, which flushes all the goo to the oil pickup mesh from the crankcase walls.

Clutch issue, yea, but clutch is regular maintenance item in all manual transmission cars. Clutch is no weak point in tt225, if Your car is stock.

I've heard 1.8T oil pumps can be an issue, but I have taken the sump off both of ours early in their lives. I think that is a must for peace of mind. One pick-up pipe had pieces of metal, gasket or something, which I can only assume came from when the engine was built. Both 1.8Ts have been run on fully synthetic oil, so no problems there.

Try audiworld forum, very good search facility, although obviously US spec cars for the most part. IMHO the 3.2 is a much better car than the 1.8T.
