Hi. What are the main things to look for on a S4 avant from 98? Is it a reliable car? And is it equal to the s2 avant in the general running costs?
What to look for???

If i was you i wouldnt want a 98, They had some issues with exhaust manifolds braking internally with broken turbos to follow. If you know that it has the had both manifolds and turbos replaced then it should be ok. The "new" and improved manifolds came on the 99B model, witch also has the facelift and looks much more modern. You can se if it´s a face lift ont the healight, doorhandles, headlight washerjets and if i am not wrong i think the dashcluster has changed slightly aswell. Good luck. -

As far as i know, it was the manifolds that were the big issue, There was som piece of metal inside them that came loose. And we can all work out what happens then...Comment

Running costs are higher than an S2.
Mainly MPG/fuel, and insurance.
Also, servicing costs are higher, especially if it needs a cambelt.
If it needs a new thermostat you will have to do the cambelt too!
Watch out for 150k+ miles on original turbos, as its only a matter of time until they go, which is an engine out jobComment

But compared to the s2 in general running cost? Is it about the same?
